TRYING TO EAT HEALTHY ON THE GO!

It's a little slower than fast food, but worth the wait!

A lot of times, we are on the go. Time and time again we travel long distances, and often we get hungry on the way. Fast food is one of the most common travel food choices for many, but we are trying to avoid it more and more these days. There is only so many times that you can end up watching people dissect Chicken McNuggets on YouTube at 3 am before you really start to wonder...

ATTEMPTING A BETTER OPTION!

As you can tell from this photo, the fast food options were readily available on our trip to pick up Rosemary, our new dog yesterday. For those of you who only use "old speak," the businesses labelled as "Mc D's" and "T Bell" in the photo above are McDonald's and Taco Bell... for some reason entire words, even short words like "taco," are getting more difficult for newer generations to pronounce. Anyway, there was also a grocery store nearby, so we opted to try to find something a little healthier to eat.

These days I really prefer food that we grow or raise ourselves, but that can be difficult, especially when travelling. Rather than purchasing the over-priced pre-made salads at the the store, we opted to make some salad wraps. For one, we would save money by assembling them ourselves. Moreover, they would hopefully be better for us than any fast food would have picked up at the drive-thru and they should also save us some money. Finally, by making them into wraps, they would be much easier for the @little-peppers to enjoy in the vehicle without making a mess.

After laying out the wraps, I added some ranch dressing. Assembling these in the parking lot of the grocery store did take a little more time than going through a drive-thru, but it was still easier for me to make up some for all of us while we were stopped rather than trying to have @mama-pepper assemble them while I was driving down the road.

After the ranch dressing can the meat. I used sliced turkey meat rather than chopped and grilled chicken breast. The lunch meat style turkey meat would do a much better job remaining in the wrap as we ate them, which again reduces the potential for a mess, especially when young children are involved.

After that all that was left was the salad. The chopped iceberg lettuce, carrots, and cabbage may not exactly even be the best salad blend, but it was still probably better for us than a McNugget. Since our @little-peppers will eat just about anything, we figure we might as well present them with better options.

You may have noticed that I only made four wraps to start with, even though we have seven people in our family. Well, @mama-pepper gets a whole one, just like I do, and the four biggest @little-peppers each get a half. Since little Buddy-Pepper is only one, he just gets pieces of Moms rather than having his own to hold onto.

This is just one simple meal idea to think about when travelling. The time has probably come for many of us to seek better options for food anyway, and we are certainly trying to take steps in that direction. It may not always work out, but we think it's worth the effort.

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Simplicity is the key when you have an army. It is one of my key points and I only have 2. Wraps are one of the longest running meals I have made for myself. As a dirtbag, poor, rock climber back in the day the wraps were about all I ate. Even today I will opt for them over a sandwich so I can cutout more of the breads in deference to the veggies.

Nicely done!

Self made food is the best!...:)...

@papa-pepper You have shown me so much today :D Kiddos are growing up so fast !!

I am salivating!

I'm glad to see you take care of your family with healthy and good food to keep your body healthy.

Thank you!

Wellcome sir 😊😎

That is awesome! Your little peppers faces really show their happiness and gratitude.

We were forced into a Mc D's meal courtesy of a road trip with nothing else around. I felt like crap the rest of the day and even into the next day. It had been a few years since I ate there, never again.

Welldone
Its so much nice that you did that. It saves money and also improve your foodie skills
I will like to ask @little-peppers how delicious it was?

"Good" - Pinkie-Pepper
"Me, Mmmmm I love it!" - Monster Truck
"Good" - Sweet-Pepper

Wow
Yummy yummy
I wish i can have a bite too

Smart move daddy... I know its better than the cheese block meal you had in the car on your birthday!

LOL - You remember!

Seems good for you and your pretty kids health! But... I prefer taco bell infact... :-)

LOL - You are not alone!

I have a road trip coming up and will definitely be doing this. Timely share for me, thanks!

Dude...you seriously need your own T.V. show. Such a practical mind, and always a plan to put your ideas into operation...

We could call it "Papa Pepper's Practical Pointers"...or something like that...

Why don't you pitch the idea to the network, and let me know!

Which one would you prefer?

Hey I still would call that fast food! A much better option..good call sir..good call!

Sweet! Where are the blocks of cheese?!?! Haha

Back in Wisconsin! LOL

LOL - Right, my birthday, I remember that now thanks to @otage!

At first I thought it was a Wisconsin joke!

Nope haha

Good for you Papa Pepper! I boycotted all fast food years ago. McDevils and Toxic Hell are the anti-Christ! If you must eat on the go, eat at Chipotle. After our son is born we plan on going Vegan. Avoid gluten too if you can help it.

Now is the time to pay attention, especially when little ones are getting involved.

It looks really good.

4 kids meals starts to add up real quick one imagines.

I can’t imagine mama-pepper putting those together while on the move lol! It still looks a little interesting putting those together on the seat too.

Definitely worth the effort! You end up with a tasty lunch and healthier than the mystery meat McNuggets! I know they are supposed to be chicken, but its nothing like I have ever seen or tasted! We do this on road trips still. I did it when the kids were small and now with grandchildren. To them, it is an adventure. They help choose what goes in the taco or sandwich, the topping, mayo or mustard, and what fruit for dessert later, apples, bananas or grapes. Juice or milk to drink!

I love it. We do that quite a lot, especially when the kids were little and we were going to the in-law's house in FL. I used to feel awkward when we would do that on a trip, stop for a picknick in a parking lot or rest area. I think I got used to it, plus it gets expensive feeding 5 to 8 of us even at McDonalds... (The oldest son could drop two big macs without even breathing.)

Yeah, we like the rest area picnics too! Much better!

keep health, because health is the most valuable treasure ;)

I feel like these Salat Wrap are a real business idea. Especially in our fitness crazed times, these could sell like crazy.

Good point!

I wonder, are there any fitness-food restaurants? If not, that should change. That seems to be a gold mine.

Lol, i commend the innovative spirit of yours and @mama-pepper, it comes handy all the time. I appreciate your upvotes on my post, was thrilled when i saw them. Thanks @papa-pepper.

Much love!!!

Thank you so much!

Belly filling food for sure.

Well done, Chef Papa-Pepper. Absolutely far better and way more delicious than the fast food artificially flavored food. Knowing what you eat is the way to go and when you make the meal yourself it magically tastes better. Bon apetit ;)

Looks tasty.... I wish I can have some of it..
