I had a funny revelation one day when I ordered a banana at Panera. I found it strange that the employee picked up the banana with a protective sheet. Isn't is already protected with it's peel? A genius creation for a snack on the go.
As someone that eats bananas every day, I've always wanted to know more about this sweet self-packaged fruit. Where did they come from and more importantly what can they do for our bodies?

Musa Sapientum, the scientific name for bananas can be translated a few ways. My chosen translation is "fruit of the wise". We can trace bananas all the way back to the records of Alexander the Great's conquest of India. I was unable to find any proof of this but some even say bananas are depicted in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. Nonetheless bananas have been around for a long ass time.

Well that's interesting and all but what makes them magical? Here are my top 5 reasons why bananas are magical:

  • They can suppress appetite - Bananas are filling yet low in calories. The average banana is a little over 100 calories. They also contain high amounts of resistant starch or pectin which keeps you full longer.

  • They make you poo - A banana a day keeps you regular due the high amount of fiber. Plus "eating more fiber from fruit and vegetables has repeatedly been linked with lower body weight and weight loss", so that's a plus.

  • They are great for workouts - Because potassium is an electrolyte, it helps muscles recover from a tough workout. Some other reasons for bringing a banana to your next marathon are that they provide an excellent source of energy and can possibly relieve muscle cramps.

  • Their peels can heal - The inside of a banana peel can relieve the pain or irritation of skin. This includes anything from mosquito bites to a burn. It is also said that if you rub the inside of a banana peel on your forehead, it can cure a headache.

  • They prevent disease - Bananas contain nutrients and antioxidants that can lower the risk of some diseases such as heart, kidney or high blood pressure.

So there your have it. Bananas are magical. They can be beneficial to our bodies in so many different ways. Next time you grab for one be sure to take in all the power they possess.

Peace & Love,
Piper
