Itta Bena--the restaurant is a highly rated venue on Beale street in Memphis, TN. However, as you make your way up and down Beale street you'll be surprised to learn that there is no sign on the street or on any plaques that guide you on your way to the establishment. It is almost as if this is one of Memphis' most well kept secrets, only after some sort of right of passage do you earn the privilege of being admitted to the guild. Thankfully, nothing that dramatic need occur--you only have to enter the B.B. King Blues Club and make your way up the stairs that are directly in front of the door. Once you're upstairs--make an immediate, very sharp, left turn and head through the red door. Go up the stairs on to the right and through the door. You have arrived.
The Dining Room
Dimly lit, cozy, authentic, clean--these are all adjectives that ran through my mind upon entering Itta Bena. I immediately liked my surroundings and looked very much forward to getting more familiar with what I had discovered. Though inviting, I have yet to sit at a table in the place as it seems the bar always pulls me in for yet another encounter.
Cocktails
As you enter the cozy upstairs nook that is Itta Bena your first sight is the generously stocked bar in what is seemingly the middle of the establishment. Should you choose the dine at the bar you’ll be graced with the thoughtfully prepared cocktail menu. I’ve had a couple of different selections from their selection. Pictured right is what they’ve labeled: The Jolly Rancher—it's extremely good!
The Food
I’m fortunate enough to be able to say that I’ve had quite a few meals in the city of Memphis. Wonderful variety and I haven’t found anything that has disappointed me. The fare offered at Itta Bena is no exception. From their abundant list of starters, to the well proportioned selection of main courses, everything has proven to be fantastic!
The Staff
A friendly smile, entertaining conversation, genuine care for a fantastic experience. Each member of the wait staff at Itta Bena focused intently on delivering a great time for all of the groups present.
Conclusion
I've had the pleasure of visiting Itta Bena twice now--there is not doubt that I'll be back for many more. There isn't a single thing that I can think of that I would ask that they change. Great food. Great cocktails. Great people. Also, great sound insulation when you consider that they are located right above the B.B. King Blues Club. The amount of sound that you don't hear when you're upstairs is actually kind of amazing!
Itta Bena is awesome!
