Life of a Crabber: Pulling up pots for the Season

in food •  7 years ago

Every year around mid January as #BlueCrab fishers we are required to pull our pots up for the season to allow our regulators to remove any lost pots from the previous year. We have about 400 #crab pots which makes it a big job.

Loading the #boat is careful work. You want to make sure not to miss any or let any fall off the boat while moving. Each pot costs around $35 so we can't afford hasty mistakes.

It all starts with pot #1!

Every load is an accomplishment! Can you see the #pelican in flight hiding in this picture?

We did this years work following an intense winter storm. Our pots sometimes wrap around obstructions, get pulled by the tide towards inlets, and get buried in the sand due to shifting underwater current. (see buried pot in photo above)

Yes but the labor is worth it for the quality time on the water!
