Sashimi Vs. Sushi @senseicat

in food •  7 years ago

I have noticed that often people use the terms "sushi" and "sashimi" interchangeably, but in reality, the meanings are quite different.

Sashimi always includes thinly sliced seafood such as tuna or salmon that is not served with rice.

Sushi describes rice with vinegar that is mixed with other ingredients which may or may not include raw fish.

Arriving at the perfect mixture of rice and vinegar is a true art form and people will pay hundreds of dollars per meal at a designated hot spot as well as waiting months for a reservation.

My wife, who is Japanese, finds this very thing to be quite hilarious as well.

We live in Los Angeles, and more specifically, the San Fernando Valley. We talk often about when she first moved here from Osaka, and how confused she was when people would ask her if she wanted to go and get Sushi for lunch or dinner, which she of course would say yes too, but when getting to the place, supposedly serving Sushi, she'd look at the menu and only see California rolls, haha!

For the record,
*"Sushi" is when a raw piece of fish or a number of other ingredients, however most commonly raw seafood, is set over the top of differently prepared vinegar-rice.
*Sashimi is a raw piece or pieces of fish alone on a plate, no rice.
*And a Roll is anything wrapped in a long piece of seaweed with rice cut into sections, regardless of if it is raw or not but is not and should not be considered "Sushi".

I love that you posted this and hopefully we, together can start a revolution to have these things properly classified, forcing everyone to stop calling everything with fish, "Sushi" LMAO!

Both meals have different flavors, which have the highest nutrient is Sashimi. But I like both foods. Your post is very useful. Thanks.
I love your post.

Here in my hometown, lots of japanese restaurants opened and now its kind of "fashion" to go dinner there, but i notice more than half of them don't even know how to prepare a good Sashimi or Sushi or Tamagoyaki and i'm laughing now because some months ago i was in one and i asked for a sashimi and they brought me sushi and they didn't seem to know the difference.

Perfect balanced dish I would say 👌
