Wester, a horticulturist at the USDA's Subtropical Laboratory in Miami successfully crossed the sugar apple (Annona squamosa) with cherimoya (Annona cherimola) and the Atemoya was born. Subsequently it was naturally crossed in Venezuela and Israel in the 1920's. Today the fruit is most popular in Taiwan where it is known as “pineapple sugar apple”(鳳梨釋迦). Health benefits of Atemoya; being high in folic acid it aids in weight loss, said to lower blood pressure levels, increases the body’s energy levels, reduces the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease.
