in food •  7 years ago

Switzerland's second-largest supermarket chain, Coop, has begun selling burger sandwiches containing a protein-rich flour worm.

An Antwerp correspondent in Geneva said Coop stores in Basel, Berne, Geneva, Lausanne, Lugano, Zurich and Venturur had begun selling burger sandwiches containing flourworms. He added that Switzerland was the first European country to allow the sale of insects as food in its stores.

He pointed out that the customer demand for the sandwich, which was called "burger insects" and commonly consumed in the countries of the Far East was a little on the first day.

An amendment to the Swiss food law in May allowed the use of certain insect species, such as worm, cockroaches and locusts, in food and human food industries.

According to experts, the sting of eating insects and worms is a big mistake, and they recommend eating meals of insects, because of their health benefits, adding that insects such as roses full of proteins, and may be a substitute for milk and meat.
