The real cost of your eggs: Chicks shredded alive

The decision to no longer eat meat was the best I ever made. Vegan is a bit harder for me, tried it for a year and eventually went back to vegetarian, but that's the ideal for me. Happy to see some veg-friendly posts here on Steemit!

I just think we need to be having these conversations. Even I've been blind to some of the issues.

i read that in Asia some eggs are from soya and people cant see difference, i hope to Europe this kind of eggs not comes in 2019, because i hate sausages without meat. I think we will eat in future only that we can produce, because all other food will not have any taste or vitamins( like tomatoes,cucumbers now)

There are lots of meat alternatives these days and some taste great. We don't need meat to live and we should eat less so that there is less animal suffering.

I too wish we could have more humane animal treatment and truly we need to return to old fashioned farms, of course what people will not be prepared for is the COST of food. This is why back in the old times when there was no industry with farming most protein foods were eaten by the wealthy as people raising animals were doing so for money to survive and the chicken for a Sunday roast was a treat as most of the week was more animal bones boiled with some root veg through the winters. I am not sure people will be ready for that again, but it might come.

I HOPE we never do away with animal protein as I think it so important to the health of another animal I love, humans. certainly the relationship of animal and food WITH compassion and good life needs to come back.

I am lucky as when I am in UK I can literally walk to the farm and see the ducks and chickens that lay the eggs I buy and see the sheep and cows in the field that I eat or the pheasant and pigeon and game in the field that then becomes available at local farms. This is the way to really feel in touch with your food, but for me I could not live a vegan lifestyle as it just would not suit me.

I hope better treatment for ALL animals, including the human animal, will be coming in the new year :)

People eating less meat would certainly help. It's just not viable to scale up humane animal rearing to meet demand. I know a lot of people will never give it up entirely, but we have to be thinking about where our food comes from.

Exactly, and though it isn't always possible to find out where our food comes from, with some work you can.

Back in the US it's harder, but I do it. I found a local farmer who raises humanely. It is more of a trip to get food from him (In the US the rules on selling such food is very restricted and to even get homogenized milk I have to go TO the farm as it is illegal in my state for a farmer to sell it by transport only if you go to him).

I also always raise my own chicken and quail when I'm in the US so I have my own supply of fresh eggs, which are an AMAZING source of protein and also very low in calorie for anyone watching 'their figure'. That way I definitely know what is going into their diet and how they are treated.

It isn't easy, for sure, but hopefully we can make little changes here and there. If small farmers were allowed to grow and sell the meat into the larger system it would work but as I said it would be costly, therefore the farmers would have a living wage and we would all be forced to eat smaller more realistic quantities of meat, but in the USA most of the small farms were bought out over the past two decades and a lot of the major land base for it's production is owned by a few conglomerate corporate farms.

It's an odd future into which we are all headed, that is for certain.

Cute chickens. I am vegetarian for almost 15 years and never had a shadow of regret. I don't particularly like eggs but when I eat them I do try my best to be from organic farms and from chickens that they have a good life. I always try to choose food that comes from a good source, some times I cycle myself to the farms to see the animals. I believe that lately people started to care more and I do hope that those shredding processes will become just a horror story from the past.

Now that I eat near to no meat, my preferred source of protein is seafood and eggs. And until I can have my own chickens for eggs, I do my best to buy only organic or local farm ethically produced eggs, but the truth is, who knows for sure if they are truly 100% animal cruelty free. I am working on finding people who live locally, who have their own chickens and who'd be happy to sell the eggs.

This company you've mentioned sounds amazing though, and I think that would be a great way of preventing such unnecessary animal cruelty. It really is time to be more conscious of where our food comes from, and as you say, take more responsibility for how our food is produced.

Our hens keep us and the neighbour supplied with eggs. It's tempting to get some more.

We need to show support for those who are improving animal lives. They are not going to disappear from farms any time soon, but they should get the best lives possible

What do you think of non factory farming like Joel Salatin? I'm not opposed to anyone making the decision to be vegetarian, but I also don't see vegetarian as cruelty free. Modern agriculture practices are very destructive to the land and the species that inhabit it.
How do you feel about Aquaponics type systems where fish are raised as a protein source and vegetables are grown from the fish waste? Would you consider it a cruel practice?

I don't know him. Everything we do has an impact, but animals are being exploited. Growing crops impacts the environment, but a lot of that is done to feed animals that we use for meat. We'd need less agricultural land if we ate less meat. I'm in favour of efficiency as long as it doesn't increase cruelty.

I don't eat red meat often(altho I do love it!), altho I do eat a lot of fish and a bit of chicken. supposedely the impossible burger tastes exactly like beef!
