Miss. Delicious #64 : South Beauty - the newest Sichuan cuisine fad in China!

in food •  8 years ago  (edited)

Dear Steemit Friends:

In today's edition of Miss. Delicious, we'll be wetting our appetites to a restaurant called "South Beauty". From it's name, those of you who understand Chinese (俏江南) will guess that this restaurant serves "Jiang Nan" style food. Well, what exactly is Jiang Nan you might ask? Well, it refer's to the regions of China immediately South of the river Yangtze.

As the name would suggest, the restaurant primarily features dishes from south of the river Yangtze. However, it's first restaurant was actually opened in Beijing. In the year 2000, the first restaurant of South Beauty, opened its doors in the CBD (Central Business District) of Beijing. By 2002, the restaurant was so profitable, that it had expanded by a further 80 stores outside of Beijing. It positioned itself as a the "Louis Vuitton" of the restaurant business.

With such a grand plan, let's go inside and see if they have what it takes to take on the restaurant business and become the "Louis Vuitton" of restaurants in China. It will be a challenge for South Beauty to retain it's quality and assertion of fine dining if they hope to expand to 500 restaurants across China. No doubt, it will feel like a fast food chain with so many branches.

Still, with Sichuan food back in style, it might have the broad customer base and general appeal to make it happen.
In fact, the mask used as part of the South Beauty logo, is a mask from Sichuan Opera. This is a style of opera that many Chinese people still enjoy to this day, and combining this with the Sichuan food delicacies, I think they're doing a good job maintaining consistency of their image.

Since Sichuan food favours the hot and spicy chilli styles, it's dishes are usually a deep and rich colour red. South Beauty have taken note of this and decorated their restaurants in this "Chinese Red" colour as their principle colour theme.

Deep red lanterns, giving just enough light to show off the traditional landscape paintings.

One section of the decorations within this restaurant particularly interested me. It was the calligraphy wall. Not only are the characters beautifully written, they also remind me of some ancient classical museums with calligraphy. Surely we're at a restaurant and not a museum?

What's amazing is they continue to use this recurring theme of red for ancient ceramic household utensils.

At the same time, they have concessions selling some of China's best alcohol.

The patterns on the doors permeate with the implicit charms of the ancient South.

On some of the doors, the Sichuan opera masks make yet another appearance. This time, in smaller size compared to the one at the entrance.

In one of my previous posts, I wrote about "Why Chinese people eat in private rooms ",to many of my new followers, you've probably not had the opportunity to see what these private rooms are like, so for you guys new to my blog, i've decided to use a private room to show you what it's like.

The most eye grabbing thing in the private room is no doubt the large crystal chandelier in the center of the room.

Combined with the Southern styles of lanterns and landscape paintings, the whole room feels like a fusion of anglo-sino cultures in the form of room decor!

But it's not just a room for dining. No, inside a private room, you'll also find a sofa, and a tea table, and most of the time a TV!

This white disc like antique attracted my attention. It reminds me of the infamous Spring and Autumn period relic called the "He Shi Bi".

A cup of scathing hot tea signals the beginning of tonights feast.

Of course, no Chinese banquet can go ahead without alcohol.

Friends coming from far to join us for dinner must be honored with the opening of a bottle of white spirit. Positive business discussions should also warrant the sharing of white spirits. Actually, there are few instances where dinner gatherings are not an overwhelmingly positive experience, one that creates stronger bonds between all the participants.
I actually wrote an article before about the etiquettes of dining in China. Feel free to review that if you're interested.

Meanwhile, I just noticed the Sichuan Opera mask logo reflecting in the glass wine cups. This restaurant sure does pay a lot of attention to details.

Let's check out the food and see if they are as impressionable as the rest of the restaurant would suggest..

From the dish presentation, to the ingredients and sauces. Souh beauty makes it clear that they are attentive to
details, and meticulously design each dish with fine detail. Many of their dishes actually carry cultural parables and historical contexts.

Coriander Silk Belly Tripe

Sweet and Sour Lotus Roots

Diced Green Peppers with Beef in Vermicelli

This is such a peculiar dish, it's actualy the first time I've ever seen something like it.

Dried Chilli Peppers with Okra

This is definitely a seasonal dish. Not only is it low in fat, it's also low in calories and cholestrol too.

Chinese people apparently love this dish very much. (And here I am tasting it for the first time !)

Walnuts with Garlic Chives

Beanshoots with Tofu

This platter of marinated dried meats is served with chilli powder suds.

Naked Oat Lettuce with Sesame Paste

Have a guess what this beautiful box is used for?

The next dishes will serve as the main 'hot' dishes. First up, we have Prawns with Peas. Very healthy and nutritious!

Stir fried fungus and vegetables

Abalone fish with Radish and Mushroom pot

A very flavoursome dish that goes well with some plain rice.

Scolded radish

Sichuan poached sliced fish in chilli oil

Simmer fried beancurd

Lush green Chinese lettuce

This is Bamboo Soup. Very healthy, very delicious.

Vermicelli with seasonabe vegetables

Finally, we have the Fruit Platter Supreme to finish off for dessert. It's pretty impressive, opening up like a flower.

That wraps up our visit to the fine dining Sichuan restaurant, South Beauty. Once contracted as the sole caterer for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, this establishment has made it's name from turning Sichuan food into a standardised fine dining recipe that can be appreciated by people all over China. Whether you're a fan of Sichuan food or not, you will no doubt enjoy their many other positive attributes like food presentation, restaurant service, private rooms etc.. as well as their superb takes on Sichuan cuisine.

Hope you enjoyed this post, and don't forget to upvote, follow and comment !

thanks, Chinese restaurants are my favourite, it's not even because i'm Chinese. I guess i'll talk why in detail another day :)

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

I am also a fan of 俏江南, every time I travel to Beijing, I will have one dinner over there. Partly because there is one just right opposite to the hotel I usually stay, but main reason is still of the good food and reasonable price tag there.

Sweet and Sour Lotus Roots (糖醋莲藕) is a must have for me. Too bad that I normally go there just by myself so I don't have much chance to try that many dishes as you do.

Ooh you've been there too, then you can also attest to how nice the food is. I think then, you must try eat with a group and try more dishes next time!

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

I wish I can have a group of friends with me to enjoy the food there but I normally travel by myself, too bad:(
Which 俏江南 did you take all the photos? That one seems very new to me.
Anyway, I may not realize it even it was the same one I usually go because most of the time, I focus on the food instead of the environment.

It's really a restaurant filled with Chinese atmosphere and decoration. The food looks really great. I enjoy "Jiang Nan" style food very much and your photos are making me mouth-watering now.

Jiangnan is actually the same meaning as 'Gangnam'.

You're welcome :)

Oh you know Cantonese? lol

red is the color of the day :)
or is it not?
I once saw a Chinese cooking show
is it true that Sichuan has the best food in China?

There are many many cuisines in China depends on which part of the country you're living in, but Sichuan cuisine is one of the 八大菜系 (8 major Regional Cuisines.) It's really subjective to say which cuisine is the best because they are very different. It's like to say which sibling is the best? You can learn more from this wikipedia article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_regional_cuisine but of course the best way to find out is to travel to China and taste them all! P.S. Personally i love Cantonese cuisine the most because they use very fresh ingredients especially seafood, and the seasoning is to brings out the natural aroma/flavor of the food, while Sichuan dishes are usually overwhelmed with oil and spices.

How do you keep your figure so good after so many good blogs? Hahaha!!! I have been losing all my muscle due to office work. Got to get back on track!!

Haha suerisue, I guess I just spend as much time moving around as I do sitting down. Although, I would love to get into a routine of working out at the gym everyday, its just very difficult whilst travelling all the time.

Miss delicious is always wetting steemers lips. I can't realy hold it . These recipes, I'm wondering if I can get some in Ghana here. My appetite has been raised to the highest degree I've ever been. Hmmmmm

haha, i'm really chuffed about your comment. Thanks for making my day!

Man it looks so relaxing there, must be such a pleasant experience to dine there. Thanks for another insightful post the photos again are amazing!

It all looks very delicious!

I had never been to Sichuan but I do love spicy food! I would like to visit Sichuan one day. People say Sichuan ladies四川姑娘are beautiful. I would like to prove that if real or not .:P

Whenever a Sichuan menu is placed in front of me, my eyes instinctively gravitate towards the cold appetizers, many of which come doused in a vinaigrette-like sauce made with roasted chili oil, Sichuan peppercorns, garlic, sesame seeds, sugar, and fruity Chinkiang black vinegar.

Feel nice to have a tour guide like you. You show us every corner.

Thats what I like to do! Hopefully you guys enjoy it !

Each post feels like a tour. What if you start advertising these tours and take others from steemit with you on these adventures.

that sounds like a good idea.. maybe in a year or so when there are enough people on the platform, I could think about doing some sweetsssj curated tours of the world with yummy food stops along the way : )

俏江南应该找你代言!

对呀!

Amazing post

Life would be colourless without the flavours of FOOD. LOve the recipes of random foods. Life is too short to cherish every taste of it but what good will it be if we stop trying. A HUGE THUMBS UP FOR UR TRAVEL ADDICTION AND SHARING 👍🏻😍

Beautiful! The food and you! ;)

I like this post, Its style like served family-style, meant to be shared by everyone at the table.

Yeah, i think the restaurant caters very well to groups and families. Chinese people also love to eat at a round table with the dishes shared on the rotating platter in the center.

Amazing , food looks really delicious!

thanks hms818!

Wahoo Its look like really good and delicious.
Thank you for sharing. amazing pictures.

Thank you

You're welcome! It certainly surprised me how good the quality of food was for very reasonable prices. This is one of the things I like about Chinese cuisine. It's never too expensive, but always very delicious.

i love the pistures

Watching all the pictures of foods and wonderful decor it is already increasing my appetite. I would love visit south beauty once in my life.

make it happen! It's not too far detatched from reality!

South Bueaty 俏江南 the restaurant once was great but already on its down path now. The decorations are bueatiful but not edible. The food might not be bad but not worth its sky high price.

It all looks so delicious . I think my diet is going on vacantion somewhere very very far :D ^^

I am soo lucky I don't have to worry about a diet, but i'm scared about when I do have to start worrying about it what i'll do about my love of food!

There is a way for everything .. Sooo be happy and enjoy your life and your food :))))

Mmh I really want to go eat there

Stunning images! You made me craving! :D

The restaurant looks beautiful. I like the foods too...anny indication of the cost for a family of 4?

you know, the cost will be down to how much you order. But a typical bill for a group of 4, will be around $50 in total.

Great then I will use some of my steem power and order even more!!! Steem power is the best power!!!

thank you stefan.steynberg, food is always there at the beginning :D

I was wondering if you always wear a customized shirt with you? I did not intend to offend you, just demonstrating how much this community matters to you. Congratulations!

Of course i don't take offence to your question. I do take my steemit clothes nearly everywhere I go. It's just nice representing Steemit, because often people will come up to me and ask me what it is. Then it's a perfect opportunity to do word of mouth marketing (in my opinion the most effective method of marketing for retention of users and gaining quality end users).

Wow. Thanks. I never thought about it!Today I learned something new!!

Your T-shirt just got all of my attention, it's amazing!

thank you! I do like it very much :D

The dishes looks delicious and beautiful photos. I am a newbie in this platform interested in food and travel as well. It would be great if you could follow me.

A feast for the eyes as always. I ate my way across China for 2 months - it was as mouth watering as these photos. Thanks for the reminder.

You're welcome. Sounds like you ate a whole lotta food! Did you gain any weight??

@sweetsssj Haha - good question. It was amazng - I did not gain any weight at all during my 2 months there. I actually lost weight. I think it is because I was a tourist on the move and partly because I ate differently . I drank a lot of teas and ate a lot of delicious vegetables.

Just words of congratulations leave my mouth for their work, they are always soreprendente, I like this culture a lot, the dishes look delicious, thank you very much lady @sweetsssj for these magnificent works
have a nice week

Thank you jlufer, glad to share my culture and it's food with you! Have a marvelous week :D

Great blog and great pictures, @sweetsssj. The pictures with short description about each of them, go really well together.

thank you isteemit; not all good blogs need to have huge amounts of text. The modern social medium prefers quick attention grabbing photos :D

That's actually very true :D

The pictures made me really hungry. Another good post. :)

thank you beng05, that's what I like to hear!

As the name suggests, the restaurant mainly serves dishes from the southern Yangtze river. Wow it's very interesting whether there's all the traditional menu from the south ... Miss @sweetsssj

Indeed, actually it's original meaning was food styles south of the Yangtze river, but it's mostly Sichuan food.

Loving your posts. I can't travel so I can see that part of the world through your eyes and posts. The food looks sooooooo good.

thanks tess! Really appreciate it, I get to keep doing this because all you guys support me so well !

I am now following you @sweetsssj

Alcohol and food are my addictions so I understand :) And, oh, the food made me feel hungry. The presentation was flawless.

That's what I love to hear! We're resonating!

Yep.. I'm sure your next post will be even better... Take care and keep Steemin'

One of my roommates is from Sichuan. She offered me some of her cooking the day I moved in, it was the spiciest thing I've ever eaten in my life. Like, my mouth went numb. I grew to love it eventually, haha.

lol, that's the way of the Sichuan people. But as you said, it definitely grows on you!

I am actually not too much into food, but that restaurant looks incredible! I really love the architecture and style.
Would love you to check my East Timor series sweetsssj, I could use some support from someone like you ;-)

I enjoy your post. :)

thank you hanna!

Up to your usual high standard. What a fantastic restaurant, the attention to detail is amazing. This is definitely one for the future. X

You know, I don't usually follow the 'big guys', but your posts are exceptional so, I am following you now so I don't miss another great post. Thank you for showing me parts of the world I never dreamed of wanting to visit before you showed them off. X

Thank you get-baking. I'm not one of the 'big guys'! I'm just a down to earth person just like you! I only happened to have joined before you that's all :)

Well you're work is very impressive, and due to this you have a lot of followers - all credit to you. I only have so much time to spare and love reading other posts, you learn so much from them. If I read it is only fair I comment which again takes time, so I limit myself to the smaller/medium posters generally. However, there are a few posters like yourself who produce fantastic work. I have finally decided that I must follow them as I do not want to miss fantastic posts. Please do not think this is a request to have you follow me back, it isn't. With your quantity of followers, your following me back would be a futile exercise. Love your work and it gives me great pleasure to read. X

Thank you. Do not use this site as it has been stolen by @jennswall @finleyexp ! If I get it back I will contact you. Previous support most appreciated. A friend is posting this for me. X

This is a lie. The @get-baking account has not been stolen.

Absolute joke. These two recon I have asked them to do work of 5,500 Euros in 3 months. Not likely when I needed every penny to buy my house. I even sold my Audi Q7 car to do this. I am also an ex Applied Computer Science teacher and Head of Department. Why would I pay them to do this amount of work on Steemit development? I can and have done it myself. It really is so pathetic just to try and scare me into not persuing the fraud committed against myself which I am involving the police here in Spain. A full history will be my first post on my new site. I will forward it to all my followers. Please view this pathetic attempt to explain their actions. @sweetsssj The @get-baking account is being held in lieu of payment for services rendered from March 2017 to present. The outstanding debt falls just under 4000 euros.

I do not make it a policy to speak against others. I had continued to help this person even after the initial slander was introduced to the community of Steemit, but in this case I feel the need to defend these accusations with the proof that I have at hand.

Here is the link to the outstanding bill: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-jkKuiB-6vmR4I_UVDGijb3960dUrL37qjbtA8ZVZcw/edit?usp=sharing

"Wetting our appetites"hahaha :) Very nice.
I think they might have a good chance at the 'Louis Vuitton' concept. With a lot of restaurants they will have tremendous buying power and can demand the best quality in their ingredients from suppliers. I guess it comes down to whether they can also get that many excellent chefs as well...It looks very delicious and the prices seem quite reasonable.
Really very interesting links also. A rainy day here so there was time to do a bit of catch up...You have been working very hard for a long time to promote understanding. There is more than one great Beauty in the South!

In spite of it being infamous, I find some courage in the He Shi Bi legend. Bian He recognized great hidden worth and had the nerve to speak of it to the powerful at great personal cost until that value was recognized.( Of course, this is just me curious on google and there is much of that history of which I am entirely ignorant. . There certainly was a lot of cruelty around it as well. )
