Popcorn experiments

How easy is it to make popcorn at home?

When I first tried to make popcorn at home, I thought it would be as straightforward as it can be.

In fact, with so many people making it at home, it shouldn’t be difficult at all, otherwise all those people wouldn’t make it.

(This picture shows how the popcorn that I made ended up looking like)

My first impression was that you just need to get some corn, and a couple of other ingredients, and use a cooking utensil, in order to be able to finally make some nice popcorn.

However, you still need to follow cooking instructions to the letter, even when making something as plain as easy as popcorn, otherwise you will end up burning it.

Can you make popcorn with e.g. canned sweet corn?

My experiments with making popcorn began when I bought a can of sweet corn at the supermarket.

I thought that it would make nice sweet popcorn, but little did I know how wrong I was.

So, I put some oil in a deep saucepan, and then added the sweet corn (which I had drained before adding it), and then waited for the corn kernels to pop, and waited, and waited… and waited…

Nothing happened, apart from the corn getting cooked to the point of getting burned, but not a single kernel popping out though.

Thus, I found out that, based on my experiment, it is not possible to make popcorn with canned sweet corn kernels, no matter how long you wait; you only waste your time, because you will never “persuade” sweet corn kernels to pop out.

Playing it safe with popcorn cooking instructions written on the label

After reading quite a few articles and recipes online about how to make homemade popcorn, the next time I visited a supermarket (a Lidl, just to let you know), I bought a pack of corn that is special for making popcorn.

Thankfully, there were some simple popcorn cooking instructions on the label, which I decided to follow.

So, when I came back home, I used the same saucepan as before, added some olive oil (just enough to cover the kernels) and a tablespoon of salt, and put it on the stove.

When the oil was ready (hot enough), I added the corn kernels, stirred them a bit, and covered the saucepan with its lid.

And then, the miracle that I was so eagerly waiting for, happened!

I heard the sweet noise of the first kernel popping out!

That was it.

I had finally managed to cook something as plain and simple, as making popcorn actually is…

The rest is history, and, in fact, a very short history, because no sooner had I emptied the saucepan into a plastic container than

I saw the popcorn literally vanishing and making some people happy because they were eating something so delicious.
