If you're like me you love a good dolop of peanut butter on a seeded bagel or in your protein shake π But what should you be looking out for and what should you be avoiding? Here's a quick guide..
1) Less Ingredients the better! Peanuts and a dash of salt would be perfect but just be careful of lots of additives and a few other things.. keep reading ππΌ
2) Fats! Basically, trans fats and saturated fats are bad, unsaturated fats are good! So if you have a few tubs of peanut butter in front of you, compare the labels and choose the lowest in saturated fat ππΌ
3) Sugar! The lower the sugar the better for you, be careful of Β "low fat" claims as they usually boost the sugar to make up for it and in the long term this is worse for your body. If you don't burn sugar off it stores as fat π₯Β
4) Avoid flavoured peanut butters if possible like cinnamon and chocolate for example, these will typically have reduced protein in them and increased sugar! βπΌ
5) Protein and Fibre, in a nutshell, no pun intended, the higher the better for both of these. Protein for rebuildlong and recovery of muscles and Fibre to help break down and regulate the sugars you eat. They also both give you the feeling of feeling fuller so you're less likely to snack again soon. ππΌ
6) Carbs to Fibre Ratio... if the carbohydrates are 30g and the fibre is 1g that equals a ratio of 30:1. The lower the better for this! So try and get below 10:1 or even better would be 5:1 ππΌ
7) Crunchy or Smooth?! Possibly the hardest decision π§ You decide! βπΌ
Peanut butter is good for you in moderation and depending what your goals are will also depend on how much you should consume of it. Hope this was useful! Enjoy π₯Β
