Tipping on take-out. Do you do it?

in food •  7 years ago  (edited)

Tipping after eating in a restaurant is almost always expected but what about when you pop in to get takeout?

Sure the guy put a napkin and a fork in the bag for you but that took 2 seconds. Whats that worth?

So, do you tip on take out? If so, do you tip the same amount for takeout as when you dine in?

Hey! I've worked in restaurants for a few years now and what people generally don't know about servers is that we have to tip out the kitchen on our sales. This means that regardless of what people tip on their bill, we have to tip the "house" a certain percent of the bill (at least in Canada and I'm pretty sure this is standard in the U.S. too). Typically tip out is 5%, so on a take-out order, you should at least tip 5% so the server doesn't have to pay out of their pocket for you to get take-out!

I have never heard of that, it's certainly important to know.

I'm spanish, I barely have money to pay the food. xd

Lolz

I try to be as generous as possible with tips, even when it's something like takeout. Just think if the situation was flipped, how would you feel if you got a tip for a takeout order? How would you feel if you didn't get a tip? You literally have a chance to make someones day better by giving them a few more bucks for some food you ordered, it might be a small thing to you but it could be a big thing for them. Cheers!

If I worked there and didn't get tips and/or didn't make the money I expected I would simply find a new job.
