RANDOM FOOD DISCUSSION #2 - McDonald's vs KFC vs Burger King - who reigns supreme?

in food •  7 years ago  (edited)

One luxury of the modern world we live in is that we have a lot of choice. In competitive markets such as fast food we can walk down the street and have 4/5 different options for us to choose from.

Looking at the front runners in this industry, i would love to hear your thoughts on the the big three and which you think reigns supreme?

All my 'research' is based on rigorous testing over the first 26 years of my life in the UK. It would be interesting to see if peoples views change based on location US/Europe etc.

To look at this briefly i will use my own opinions the three chains above based on Variety, Price and Flavor.

Variety

McDonalds: One of McDonalds strongest qualities for me is the variety, from constant seasonal promotions, to McDonalds Monopoly, there is always something new to try along side the usual favourtes such as Big Mac. 9/10

KFC: In the UK they seem to do less than competitors such as McDonalds when it comes to experimenting. I believe this is down having a strong USP and lack of competition on the Fried market. However, when they do try something new its usually pretty crazy. I.e The double down burger :O (see below) 8/10

Burger King: Out of the three, Burger king seem to do the worst in this category. They have very limited new promotions and focus on providing quality in their existing menu. 6/10

Price/Value

Price is a little hard to Judge as all have daily deals and Saver Menu options available. It can also vary a lot across different sites.

McDonald's: Their saver Menu ensures that if you only have £1 in your pocket, you're able to walk out with one of their famous Hamburgers. you can also pick up a Big Mac Meal for around £4.50. Which seems like good prices in comparison to some of their competitors. The issues come when you consider how long you will be full for after and how much you get for a 'meal' in just a burger fries and drink. 7/10

KFC: With KFC i have always found that you get good value for money. Their box meals and Buckets can will cost more than a Big Mac meal by comparison, but you also get a lot more for the increase such as an addition piece of chicken and a side. If you were to share a bucket with someone at about £5/6 each you will be full for hours not minutes. 8/10

Burger King: Burger King seems over priced with most meals costing £1-2 more than what you would pay at McDonalds without the additional extras you would get from KFC. They also don't have a cost effective (Saver) menu in the UK. They do however release time sensitive deals where you can get the current daily offer for around £4 on a meal deal. This is handy but really limits your options. 6/10

Quality

Compared to Michelin Star restaurants, all fast food should be considered very poor quality. Yet we all still love it. The Marketing expectations vs Actual quality is a debate for another day. In my humble opinion this is how they compare against each other.

Mcdonald's: The food quality is standard for what you expect from fast food. The excess salt makes it enjoyable but its not often i finish a Mcdonald's and think 'wow that was great. Possible exception being my first Big Tasty with Bacon which was a revelation. 7/10

KFC: The Chicken itself is the best in the business but can often we let down by soggy fries and inconsistent gravy. If they only sold chicken i would have to give it a 9, but failings in other areas have dropped my score a bit. 7/10

Burger King: Despite the lack of variety and higher price i believe Burger King wins the quality battle hands down. I find their fries to me much better than both the competitors above and although i find myself having the same thing each time. (usually a whopper) I suppose it comes down to the old saying 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it.' 9/10

i feel like the only thing holding back BK is the prices of their drinks.

Are you in the Uk or the US? drinks in the UK seem reasonable compared to its competitors.

Personally I find KFC the most delicious, however from a business perspective McDonalds prevails every time - they are to this day, and always likely will be, one of the largest and most successful brands in the world.

as i started writing it i was going to go with KFC then changed my mind half way through to BK. im glad I can dip in/out of each of them when the times right :)
