Good Saturday afternoon Steemians. Today I wanted to take a moment to share with you our recent grocery haul at our WinCo Foods. When I found out that Oklahoma would be opening up two of them my heart skipped a beat. I used to love shopping there when I lived in Stockton California. At that time the recession was deep, Stockton was the number one city for home foreclosure and the city filed bankruptcy. I worked two jobs, one full time and one part time to pay the bills and provide for my most basic needs. Times were hard then and to a certain extent they still are. What I remembered fondly was that WinCo made the dollar stretch so much further than any other grocery store I had been to. I only wish I knew the things I know now back then when it came to buying food and preparing for the long term. Thankfully we get wiser as we get older, or at least we should that is.
These days it seems as if you have to pay to "experience" the shopping pleasures of certain grocery stores that claim to have health in mind such as Whole Foods, Natural Foods, and even the beloved Sprouts. That's not to say that we will never go there again for some specialty items that can be hard to find at conventional grocery stores. When it comes to bulk foods especially WinCo Foods has got it going on. The quality and prices are the best and the selection is so much larger. Amazon used to have better deals compared to the other stores mentioned and it still doesn't compare to the savings, we didn't have to wait two days to get it in the mail or pay the extra costs of shipping. It was well worth the drive into Midwest City Oklahoma.
So with out further delay I will start diving in to what we picked up, the total weight of the food, and how much it all came down to.
- Muesli @ 5.54 lbs
- Yukon Gold potatoes @ 2.58 lbs
- Himalayan salt fine and medium @ 4.26 lbs
- Raw Demerara sugar @ 7.26 lbs
- Split green peas @ 14.60 lbs
- Curry spice @ .67 lbs
- Ginger root @ 1.32 lbs
- Dry Roasted peanuts unsalted @ 6.14 lbs
- Long grain brown rice @ 25 lbs
- Small red beans @ 25 lbs
- 8 Garlic bulbs weight not included
The total weight of our shopping haul came out to be 92.37 pounds for a subtotal of $92.02. That is pretty incredible considering the majority of these foods will double in size when cooked. They have a long shelf life and are nutritious foods. Now that we have all of this it is time to get it properly stored into containers and into the pantry.
I hope this blog gives you the inspiration to start prepping your pantry and that you found it to be most helpful. This particular haul is just an example of some things we choose to keep in ours and is ever changing and developing. If you like this blog please leave it an up vote. If you can find these types of foods at a lower price please do share in the comment section. If you are a prepping enthusiast please resteem this to help get the word out. Until next time take care Steemit family.
Less than a dollar a pound!
Not shabby at all!

I am not sure we have a store like WinCo in the UK.
But we do bulk buys with a local Suma food buying group - unfortunately though that is only once every two months though.
I have also found I can buy organic flower in bulk at very good prices direct from the mill itself - Shipton Mill.
