This weekend we made further progress on our rabbitry by cutting back the massive lemon tree and installing the hanging hutches in position against the wall.

This type of hutch provides the best hygienic conditions for animals that constantly poop and pee. The cages will be made comfy with the addition of nest boxes and a bed of straw. The bunnies will also come out to forage on the lawn twice a day.

20181203_104513~2.jpg We had to remove one of the old tree's twin trunks to make space.

Here are the glamour photos of our first breeding doe, a Champagne D'argent named Violet Hunter. She is so gorgeous, I can't wait to pick her up at the show in two weeks! By that time, her new home and life of luxury will be prepared for her queenly reign!

Champagne D'argent rabbits were developed as a meat breed in France by the late 1600s. They are gentle, friendly rabbits with beautiful fur that changes from black into silver as they mature. Violet Hunter is coming to us from a reputable rabbitry and has a her show pedigree, so we will be able to save her finest babies as new generation breeders, or perhaps find them homes on the show circuit. Her litters promise to make a fine meat pen to feed my family with ethical meat.

Thanks for checking in on my suburban homestead! And remember, growing and sharing food builds community.

Love,cat

Wot?! Amazing, thanks!!!

Oh, Violet Hunter is such a beauty! I so hope that your foray into the rabbit world goes splendid, they are super fun creatures to have around.:) My favorite rabbit ever that we had on the place was a Rex cross whom my daughter christened Spotless Sputnik. He had lots of spots, lol!

Placing your rabbitry underneath the lemon tree is awesome, and I see that your hens are going to be having a blast with the offerings that fall from the cages, ha ha!

Also, it snowed last night, so the pictures of your lemons and tree about made me cry. Think I am going to go eat a warm bowl of soup....

Thanks so much for the encouragement! Starting this rabbitry is a big investment and an even bigger commitment and responsibility. Violet Hunter and her family deserve the best! I love the name Spotless Sputnick for a spotted bun bun, so adorable.

Cheers and enjoy your delicious soup! It's another sunny day in Southern California <3
