There's a food truck revolution happening and I'm happy as hell to be living in Los Angeles to experience every savory minute of it!
While watching an episode of "Hot Ones", I began to look at some of the other videos that they offered on their YouTube channel. The production company is called, First We Feast and they offered up another series, called Food Grails. I noticed that one of those episodes was about a food truck movement happening in South Central Los Angeles and I became intrigued.
The gist of this episode that got me hooked was the concept of African American Angelenos introducing their version of Tacos. I mean, everyone else has ripped off their culture and great food, so why can't they express themselves with their interpretations of other culture's cuisine?
Their story fascinated me. Instead of selling drugs, Chef Ocho wanted to do something productive and began selling tacos and quesadillas in his neighborhood. Rival gangs started having treuces to eat his food. We all gotta eat, right? This amazed me.
So, for 3 months, I plotted and planned to go hit up his food truck, All Flavor No Grease (AFNG), but every time I would head his way, the Instagram feed would say that he had Sold Out of food.
The wait is finally over. The AFNG crew came to West Covina, California and I can definitely tell you that it was worth the hassle. The best part is that they got a new Food Truck that is really functional.
They were only offering Quesadillas at this stop and it was Cash Only. I was hoping for some tacos, but these would have to suffice. I was first in line and ordered their Chicken Quesadillas. They said that their Salsa and "Green Daddy" sauce were not spicy, so I decided to go for the full deal. Here's what it looked like :
The green drizzle is the "daddy" sauce and had hints of lime and avocado, but in a savory way. I thought that it would overpower the food, but it was an amazing complement to it that counterbalanced the sour cream (white drizzle). I am uncertain how the chicken bits were prepared, but appreciated the fact that the quesadilla segments were presented in easy chunks that weren't too big. One thing I can't stand about the traditional Quesadilla is that the sections are big and things get messy.
I can honestly say that this was worth every second I waited and I can't wait to bring friends to the next stop they have near me. One thing I really appreciate about All Flavor No Grease, is that they rotate where they setup shop. They hit Inglewood, Long Beach, Compton, Watts, Covina, North Hollywood and even make it to Pasadena, on occasion.
The Taco Food Truck Movement is picking up steam and if you live in Los Angeles, this is definitely worth checking out. All Flavor No Grease, Taco Mell, Bleu Truck and dozens more are bringing their interesting takes on Mexican cuisine to the masses. I appreciate their story and plan to show my support by paying my hard-earned money to eat their delicious treats.
Have you eaten at a Los Angeles Food Truck? What are some of your favorites? I'm going to do reviews of different trucks I frequent and I'm always eager to try out new spots. Hit me up with your favorites!
Ah damn... now I want tacos!
Edit:
just finished watching the video... that food looks awesome!!!

I love food trucks!!! Ill have to add this to the list of ones to try. Got any other favorites in the LA area? So far, Ive only tried Leo's Taco Truck but it was amazing. Loved it and lucked out by not having to stand on too long of a line hehe.

Koji is dope. BBKyu is a wicked fusion truck. Coolhaus started off selling their ice cream sandwiches in their trucks. There's all sorts of trucks floating around in the Inglewood, LBC, Downey, Whittier areas. lataco.com is a good resource. I'm probably going to compile a rock solid list on here soon.

Ok please excuse my ignorance, but is Inglewood a safe area? I just keep thinking of that 2Pac song "Inglewood, Inglewood always up to no good..." There's an old school rap concert there in a few weeks and I'm dying to go! You should try to do a meet up at a food truck!!! We'd make the trek :D

Depends on the when & where you go. They are building the NFL Stadium there, so there's a lot of construction and I think the new Clippers arena will be going up in Inglewood, also. It's not the safest, but there's much worse.
