Day1716
Finally found a mushroom I was positive enough about the identity to actually eat.
Hericium americanum
Bear's head tooth fungus
Related to Lion's mane, hericium erinaceus and comb tooth, hericium coralloides.
Comb Tooth Fungi
I also found the comb tooth, but didn't harvest any.
This species is found growing in dead tree logs. It is saprotrophic, meaning it gains nourishment by processing the decaying wood.
There are no poisonous look alikes, therefore it is my number one pick as the best beginners mushroom to forage.
