The ball of the 2018 World Cup is called Telstar 18. This is what adidas has just announced worldwide. The name is in clear reference to the Telstar that was quite a revolution when it made its debut in 1970. Since then, the manufacture of the ball of the maximum football party is in the hands of the German company. And in addition to all the technology used in the manufacture of the Telstar 18, it will have a chip that will allow fans to interact with it.
"Until before the '70 World Cup, the balls that were used were - in their manufacture and shape - like those of volleyball. In Mexico, adidas generates a revolution with the appearance of Telstar. Its name was inspired by a circular satellite that had been launched in the year 62 [N. of R.: the Telstar was the first communication satellite that was sent to the orbit of the Earth], but also in the solar panels that used to capture energy, which were polygonal ", explains to El Comercio Gustavo Espinoza, manager of the adidas Football category.
But not only that. Their unmistakable black and white colors were chosen because the World Cup of Mexico 70 was the first one that was televised, and with those colors the ball was going to have more visibility in the receivers of the time. In the case of the new Telstar 18, a version of the original design with a modern look has been maintained.
THINKING IN THE FUTURE
The Telstar 18 for Russia 2018 has many similarities with the Brazuca, used in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil: instead of the traditional 32 cloths, it only uses six, which are no longer sewn but adhered by a process that uses high temperatures. "The reason why only six cloths are used is because we look for the ball to be as smooth as possible and get closer to the perfect circumference", explains Espinoza.
But the main novelty in the Telstar 18 is the inclusion of a chip with the technology of near field communication (NFC), which will allow the user an interesting interaction with fans.
"The NFC chip will allow fans to interact with the ball using their cell phone. For this they must bring their devices to the ball and a website will automatically open. Among other content, you can access a series of challenges that will be updated regularly and allow the user to enter a competition with other people around the world. The registration will be done by linking with an Instagram account. The first challenge will be active from today. In the end, a winner will be chosen, "says the adidas executive.
The official ball and replicas of the Telstar 18 will be available from tomorrow November 10 at adidas.pe, brand stores and department stores.
