Today was the last day for the Europa League quarter finals. Things went exactly as I expected them to. Benfica once more fails to win a European cup, something they haven't won since Hungarian coach Bela Guttman supposedly laid a curse on the club, saying they wouldn't win another European cup until a hundred years after he left, his problem was he won two European cups with them and was turned down when he requested a pay increase. Well this year will not see the curse lifted.
But actually I thought Benfica wouldn't make it regardless of if the curse is real or not, the two away goals conceded to Eintracht Frankfurt were just too much concessions to a team as good a the Germans, I think in the Europa league they are what Ajax is in the Champions, a dark horse that came out of nowhere to scare everybody.
The other games also resulted as I thought they would, Arsenal's 2 goal lead was too much for Napoli, Valencia also had too great a lead on Villareal and even though Chelsea had it harder than I thought they would if you look at it realistically they were never seriously threatened to not go through, even though I must admit that Slavia are a very good team.
So now it is Arsenal- Valencia and Chelsea- Frankfurt, I think all four are capable of going through and winning the cup, at this stage in their local leagues I think they can put all their resources in Europa so I think it will be two great semi finals, I think it will be an English final, but with the calibre of the other two teams anything can happen. May the best win.
