Nothing screams ‘macho’ more than the adrenaline-fueled world of football. This popular sport has long been associated with masculinity because a) it’s played only by men knocking each other to win and b) it requires a lot of physical strength and endurance to simply get through the whole process.
But men aren’t the only ones capable of doing that.
The National Football League (NFL) aka the biggest arena for football is no longer ‘Not For Ladies.’ If you know this event well enough, then you’d know that women now hold just as much power as men in football, and there’s living proof for that.
Toni Harris
History was made this year when 22 year-old Toni Harris signed a letter of intent to become the first female NFL player. This was after she accepted a football scholarship from the Central Methodist University in Missouri, which is a part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
Despite getting diagnosed with ovarian cancer when she was 18, Harris pushed through with her athletic dreams, beating out the disease and spending the last two years playing football at East Los Angeles College in California.
Harris also got featured in a Toyota advertisement that was aired during the Super Bowl, in which the brand highlighted how people were underestimating her abilities to excel in such a ‘manly’ sport.
But aside from Toni Harris’ football emergence, there were already women on the NFL that came before her and made just as big of an impact in all of sports.
Notable Women in Football
Sarah Thomas - After years of officiating high school football games, Thomas proved herself worthy of an upscaled professional football career by becoming the first female full-time official at the NFL in 2015.
Jen Welter - That same year was a monumental one for women in football as Jen Welter became the first female coach in a professional football league, backing the Arizona Cardinals for the preseason.
