Rochdale has been rescued from relegation by Joe Thompson, the man who beat cancer twice

in football •  7 years ago

Some truly inspiring news came from the League One where Rochdale has been saved from relegation on the final match of the season. On 69th minute of the game against Charlton the Dale’s midfielder Joe Thompson steered home the only goal of the game that allowed his side to move up the relegation zone by a single point.

Most remarkable thing about that win is the fact that Thompson just returned to the first team after going though personal hell – he has been diagnosed with cancer twice in the space of 5 years.

Initially he was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in 2013 which he had fought in 2014 after six-month course of chemotherapy. Bit in early 2017 Thompson was diagnosed with cancer again and once again he fought his way back to complete recovery later the same year.
