Arsenal and Liverpool target Max Meyer has rejected Schalke’s offer of a contract extension.

Meyer has been with the Bundesliga club since 2009, making his first-team debut for them in 2013.

The 22-year-old displayed some impressive performances but was not a regular starter until he converted from attacking midfielder into holding midfielder this campaign.

Schalke are excited to acknowledge his enhanced performances with a new contract amid interest throughout Europe, but the 22-year-old has turned down the proposal.

Arsenal and Liverpool have been associated with the German international and will continue to track his progress. No. 7's current contract terminates at the end of the season.

Schalke director Christian Heidel told Der Westen that Max Meyer’s representatives, received an offer on January 12, limited until February 15, and later on informed them via email that the German midfielder has turned down the offer because of the time limit.

“We duly noted it and for now are not bound by it. This does not mean that he will not prolong his contract.

He also mentioned to Sport Bild the following: “If Max Meyer approaches us and says he wants to continue playing for Schalke, that’s wonderful. But we can’t and won’t wait for much longer.”
