Undersea foraging: Exploring the terrain

in foraging •  7 years ago  (edited)

There's nothing like diving in the warm sea if you manage to bring some FREE food to your home!

Especially if you borrow GoPro camera from your sister and you have sea just few meters from your home! I'm not a professional but harvested a lot of sea shells in my life! I can also prepare them and enjoy eating them.

I will have more posts like this in next few days, so I will start with shells that you shouldn't pick and eat and I will explain why. Some of them are protected by the law.

For example, these "noble pen shells" or "fan mussels" (Pinna nobilis in Latin).

They are endemic to Mediterranean sea and can grow up to 1.2 meters. In Adriatic sea, this species is considered as endangered so I should avoid them.

You definitely shouldn't pick any mussels from the iron chain that connects buoy with the anchor.

In the sea, iron becomes rusted very fast and those mussels are not best choice to eat. Also those on the buoy! But if you find some on the rocks, don't hesitate to pick them, if they are big enough!

Those "Noah's Ark Shells" are great for eating and they are healthy, also they can be prepared for few minutes! My next foraging post will be about them. Today I haven't brought any tool to separate them from the stone.

Amazing! You should make a post on cooking them too. How do you usually go down, with breath or with full diving gear?

dumar022 - Thanks for this floating post :) You are lucky to be able to dive so near your home and to have a Go Pro to record your dive experience. Nice pictures. Even nicer is the information about the safe to eat mussels.

I have 'wasted' my weekend without getting 'wasted' and wrote a rather philosophical post about my butterfly and bee pictures called Float/Sting..What is your strategy. I request you to see and provide your views if you have time. Your comments will be very welcome. Thanks

Thank you ! ! !

We are living in a world where there are more secrets are hidden under the sea. Upvoted you :-)

Guess what I have for diner

This is what I call summer post! Wonderful

Thank you :)

Very cool. I know some guys go diving with metal detectors and find all kinds of amazing stuff like jewelry!

That's true, my friend! In the September, when no tourists are here and sea is still warm, you can find golden rings and necklaces

That looks like a giant Oreo cookie in the 2nd picture :P

Awesome! Hope you had fun! Glad to see you are being consistent with the posts :) Keep them coming! I am striving to do the same! :)

I like going to the Oregon coast to get mussels! Our safe season is in the cooler months, when there's no risk of the domoic acid and shellfish poisoning. Our state has a daily test program all along the coast. Do you have something like that in your region?

Your post highlights the importance of checking the regulations before going foraging -- nobody would want to harvest an endangered species! Happy foraging!

Thank you!
