Drop it like it's hot!

Nahhh, not your sizzling dance moves, I mean unforgiveness.

I remember when I was in elementary school, a classmate stole my hard earned candy. I don't remember what I did exactly to earn it, but my teacher at the time rewarded me with a Jolly Rancher, which was the quintessential piece of candy that every 10-year-old child longed for. And this girl simply stole it from me without a word, apology, and/or remorse. And for the longest time, her name was in my "Never To Be Forgiven" book.

Looking back now, it seems silly (the book too!). I shake my head saying to myself "Geez girl, it was just a piece of candy!" If anything, I might have been one candy short from a tooth cavity that year, and my classmate saved me. But most times, the acts done against us aren't so easy to overlook. A parent who was never around, a close friend who turned out to be a backstabber, and a colleague who carelessly said a negative word without realizing its soul-piercing consequences. I agree, these are all not easy offenses to just turn the other cheek to. But if you imagine every grudge that you embrace as a scorching hot potato, then you can understand that the longer and harder you hold on to it, the greater and more severe the burn degree you end up inflicting on yourself.

Forgiveness is not for the other person. Most times, he/she is out there living their lives free of the knowledge of what they caused you. Letting go is for you, and indirectly for the ones who love you, and the generations that come after you. Through forgiveness, you deny yourself a life of burden, emotionally, physically and spiritually, and permit yourself to enter a realm of internal freedom that most people only dream of. So I beg of you: drop it like it's hot!
This potato is not worth your life.
