It's Forgotten Friday again! Every Friday I share some kind of cool abandoned, deserted, or otherwise forgotten piece of civilization that we've came across on our travels.
Today's post will be a few photos taken at the cemetery of the circa-1900 ghost town Rhyolite. A town that sprung up into existence curtesy of a gold rush, but was abandoned and forgotten within only 10 years, or so. It is located in the northern region of Death Valley.
I have posted one or two photos from this graveyard in the past, but I'll be adding the other photos here. Some of them were less photogenic, yet more sad as they're farther deteriorated.... some were simply a pile of rocks.
The grave markers that were made of wood were certainly eerie looking. The more than 100 years of desert heat, wind, and dust storms had sanded off any trace of writing and other markings. The dry air split the wood in most cases, and the winds have smoothed them like a sandblaster would.
A few of the graves faired a bit better than their neighbors. A few had wrought iron fencing or concrete surroundings. I'm not sure if that meant the dead were from wealthier families, or were prominent in the short-lived community, or what. There was quite a diversity in graves here. There were many that I only knew were there from a slight depression in the ground.

Good post - sad though
There used to be a very old grave yard where many german settlers were buried here in cape town but sadly a petrol station was built ontop of it.

Having this graveyard be in a light state of disrepair is, indeed, sad.... but your story of one being destroyed simply for a greedy corporation is just awful! I hate corporate greed.

Really eerie looking indeed. And to think that the town once must have been thriving with people and commerce. This shows that time conquests everything. We fight worthlessly for the present while an uncertain future awaits us.
