How cool would it be if steem the blockchain owned a village, I mean like literally took over one of those little villages in Italy that have an ageing population and very few children living there anymore — certain places are offering places for very small amounts as long as you renovate and live in it for at least five years — I’ve always got in the back of my mind this vision of steem being localised, mesh networked and a digital village.
Sorry for the lack of originality on photography, I used one from unsplash and gave credit but I’d love to get out there and take my own photos and cinema graphs but no transportation, no decent camera and no time atm.
I had my morning little scan over coffee around the blockchain, it’s good to see people animated in comments, I really love being able to find a smattering of all these human voices across the world sharing their thoughts and dreams, it’s like having the public phone book for all the blogs in the world.
I’m really not interested in all the eps, diy, fyi, kyc, gbh side of all the things in steem, I know people love their curation cycles, voting rings, timing of things and having all this maths and data in their heads about computational relationships that people seem to substitute for real world skin on skin action. But I realised something in my searching and engaging this morning.
ps, you might wanna click on play on the video at the bottom for background music vibes for full immersion ;)
And that’s the lense of steem, the one we look through at it with. I can’t engage and have a social conversation or leave a comment for it to be expanded on with thought and intention mostly anywhere else — twitter is a fuck show, youtube is a troll fest and well facebook (which I rarely use) is just for people to leave either full on negative or positive on, never any real discussion there happens either.

So in some way maybe what people love about steem so much is it’s resilience to be this little online fort, this fortified group of people wanting to a room full of misfits all together in one big fuck ton blender with warts and all, maybe it’s the cantina at the end of the internet, or maybe this is the train station interconnect from matrix and our witnesses are different kinds of trainmasters going through different cycles of their coding, real time refactoring.
For me, it’s a place to play hooky from the responsibility of interacting with the real world(tm) — that never runs at the speed I want it too and it frustrates me to much with it’s back to front ways and snide side glances on the way you got there.
In this chained ‘chain letter’ ledger of hopes and dreams you can see people on their journeys, where they are and where they want to be, you can see what would be mundane to others on other platforms spark acknowledgement and comfort in others.
It really feels at times your on the top of the ramparts looking out as passes by drop in from social channels take a look not see what they expect from their usual haunts, give it five minutes and then keep on walking to ‘god knows where’ (for me I imagine this long line of disenfranchised social media people heading to the coast, ala, the road style) our castle might not be sexy enough and the moat a little over run with dtube shopping carts sticking out of the water but it’s still home - it just needs a lick of paint and she will be good to go.
I think the core of what makes this immutable blockchain attractive to those who have been with it through think and thin is the fact that this chain has a pulse that can be read, it’s not just vibrant communities and little enclaves and pockets of safe spaces in communities it’s the temperature of the room, it’s the fitbit of blogging, the pulse on all things social if you dig deep enough, everyone is here, sometimes not as themselves but they are here.
We will miss conversations and touch when the world of the AI takes over, replaced by sentiment analyse and 1 click responses, computers taking care of our actions in the pursuit of speed. Apathy will never feel so good again, our interactions muted and formulaic.
Never stop building the Fort Steemians.
