Rio Caroni and Orinoco, two rivers united and not mixed. LEGEND.

The Caroní River is the second most important river in Venezuela, being the second with the highest flow and some of the longest, reaching 952 km from the Kukenán tepuy, where it is born with the name of the Kukenán River, until its confluence with the river Orinoco, to whose basin it belongs.

The name of Caroní begins to be used from the confluence of the Kukenán river and the Yuruaní river, to 182 km of the birth of the Kukenán and to 770 km of its opening in the Orinoco river.

It is located in southern Venezuela, in the Bolívar state, being the main tributary of the Orinoco River in terms of flow. The upper basin of the Caroní is located in the Gran Sabana (Canaima National Park), in the Venezuelan Guayana, near the border with Brazil.

Caroni Basin

The Caroní river basin covers more than 95,000 km² and is part of the Orinoco basin, the most important river in Venezuela. It is constituted by two large rivers, with very similar hydrographic characteristics: Caroní itself and its tributary, the Paragua river. They are rivers with a stepped course, in which numerous jumps and rapids are interspersed with sections of slow course and scarce slope, where many meanders and horseshoe lakes occur. Among the most important falls of these rivers and their tributaries are the Angel jump, the highest in the world (almost 1000 m of free fall) and the Cuquenan jump (the tenth on a global scale, with 610 m of free fall), besides many others, of lesser height but with a considerable flow, such as the Aponwao and Caruay waterfalls in the rivers with these names, the Torón, the Eutobarima, the La Llovizna waterfall (in the first image of the present article) and the one of Cachamay, these last three on the Caroní River itself and the last two, just before emptying into the Orinoco River.

Venezuela, a country rich in culture and beautiful landscapes, with great particularities.

The Caroni River and the Orinoco River are the great waters of Venezuela. The Orinoco River is the largest and mightiest, with 2140 km; and the Caroní River, not so wide and abundant, is still one of the main rivers of the country, it is the second with the highest flow and reaches 952 km in length. Both rivers are subject to quarrel with each other, until the Orinoco is the winner because it is the largest, join in the Bolivar state - Ciudad Guayana, on the Angosturita bridge, why does this phenomenon happen?

There are two theories, the scientific one and the legend told by the original indigenous peoples of the place.

SCIENTIFIC: Abraham Mora, a chemist from the Hydrobiological Research Station of Guayana (EDIHG), says that the Orinoco is born in Cerro Delgado Chalbaud in the state of Amazonas and along its path it accumulates sediments from other rivers that are in its course and that is the origin of its yellowish coloration; explains that for its part the Caroní is dark in color because it contains high concentrations of humic and fulvic acids.

LEGEND: It is said that the Orinoco (man) and Caroni (woman), they saw love in front, really in love. They were never guilty of being born in different places, but their heart always beat with emotion when the wind caressed their souls. The Gods did not approve of their love but they defied all obstacles and agreed to meet in the distance from the mountain and go together to the blue sea. That was his dream and it was fulfilled.
