Free speech is to human rights what the Sun is to human existence.

I have had people, some of whom I regard as intelligent and thoughtful, say things that effectively bore down to, "I'd give up free speech for x."

Needless to say, I won't have it.

Free speech is to human rights what the Sun is to human existence. If it dies, so does everything else. The irony of making any statement of, "I'd trade free speech for x." is that, if you ever were to gain x, it would be because you were allowed to vocalize your demand for it. It's a statement that you want to use speech only to your end, and shut the door behind you.

The First and Second Amendments are First and Second for a reason. There are no rights worth a damn without the right to speak, and the right to defend oneself.

To suggest that we sacrifice either of those rights in order to gain a privilege, even one which is presumably life saving, is to become the foolish man who built his house upon the sand.
