Free Books

Strolling through Neu-Ulm in Germany I came across a special booth on the pavement. It is called Offener Bürcherschrank, Open Bookcase. It serves the community. Everyone can take out a book for free, read it at home or on a park bench nearby. You can keep it, bring it back or refill the booth with other books. Great idea of the local city council.
Do people still read books in times of smartphones and internet? It seems so.
In 2017, there were about 9.25 million people in Germany aged 14 and over, who daily came to pick up a book. They read new books and used books as well. Last year in Germany 9,19 billion Euros were earned with books. Even if this was a bit less than the year before, it shows that people still love books.

Books instead of cold sausages :-) Such bookcases you can find in many places nowadays. Even in old telephone boots.

Thanks artcho. Have a nice day too!

This is a very good idea. But the trust system works there. If this is in Thailand, all the books would be gone and never to be returned!! They will steal these books to be sold for money!

...maybe it would need a bit of time. Here also people take out books and sell them, however somehow after a while the system works fine. In many other cities you can find such boots as well:
