I wonder how much of it is because the courts took religion out of the public sphere, and kept politics out of our religious life. The debates of law changed from the axioms of nature and christian duties, to political schools of thought of the worship of the authority and marxism. And various infighting to try to protect us from one extreme with another extreme.
The soldiers fought for something and they risked their life fighting for this country-and some of their war buddies could have been hurt or killed. But veterans just as much as they don't like people talking bad about this country, at the same time hate what it is becoming. The subset of faketriots, as you say, Likely are trying to psychologically cope, and have likely developed a delusion or a compulsion to try to preserve their esteem and the fallen as heroes against the indefensible conduct of the police. Anything that challenges the claim that American is great hurts them and they put it upon themselves to defend America from criticism.
I know that I can never be a soldier. But for those who have seen the horrors of war and done things most of us could never consider doing, i often wonder why they put up with our lawless elitist who are more of a direct threat to this country than this countries enemies.

They're not the brave super citizens that the American public like to worship. Many of them entered the military when they were young and hadn't ventured out on their own. They went from their parents' house to big brother's house to learn to keep following orders. Unfortunately, they've never really stopped blindly obeying the State.
