just had a pointless argument about the distinction between journalism, which is colloquially referred to as "the free press", and the freedom of the press, meaning the freedom to publish. the main reason for the argument is that the person i was arguing with has an extremely distorted view of what freedom is, let alone freedom of speech.

But you let them talk, right? ;)

On a note about freedom: Freedom is not what most people think it is anyway. Freedom was a specific kind of contract given to indentured servants during colonization.

To be "free" you had to already be "human chattel" that was then "let go". If One wishes to refer to themselves in a manner in which it is implied that One was never enslaved, One says they are sovereign.
Of course today the word free has changed it's meaning to include the idea of being "born free", but only in slang and standard in English. In Law and Old English the old meaning remains the same.

But yeah, to argue the differences between who and what the press is free for seems antithetical to the concept.
