The Continental dive bar located in New York City has a new rule that was recently added and nicely placed on the front door for all patrons to see:

How did reading that make you feel? For us, it made us get a little upset... If a bar or any place for that matter is able to kick anyone out of their establishment for using a common word then "Houston, we have a problem". That is how we start losing our right to free speech. As for Continental, do not accept to see them in any big headlines. Nothing is really being done about this and very little is being said and that may have to do with the fact that the bar is going out of business. What's that? It was reported on January 23rd, that the bar had filed for bankruptcy and will be closing it's doors in a few months, the same week that the new rule came into effect. The problem here is that while they maybe closing and the problem with the Continental will go away...the backlash could last and hurt our right to freedom of speech in the long run. If we allow just one place to take away our right to take a way any word for any reason, then there will be another, than another until they all have it. When the public tries to stop it at that point because now people are getting kicked out of places everywhere, the business will get a law made and poof here is a list of words which you are no longer allowed to say!

Do not take our word for it, look at the fact that 9/11 happened. We started giving up our privacy all for National Security and Homeland Security and look at us now...Everything has the word "smart" in front of it. It connects to the internet to allow Government agencies to monitor you. The Government wants total control... they want to know every movement, every word you speak, and give them time they will try to intercept your thoughts. What better way to kick start taking the right to freedom of speech? Have a bar that is in a very populated part of America stop citizens from saying something in their bar. Let make sure it is one that is going out of business so that there is not enough time for them to see what is coming, but just enough so that they are familiar with it. Once the idea was put out there, now it is time to test it. After this bar closes there will be a phase 2. Yes they are that confident that Americans will allow this to happen, after all we have Facebook, YouTube, video games, cell phones, laptops, computers, internet and do not forget TV programming to distract us. Nope, cannot ever forget TV programming, the reason is in the name, "programming". That is one of the main ways that Americans get programmed. So tell us, do we let a place like this:

that is known for selling 5 shots of anything for $10, start the end of free speech? How do we stop them? Is it our place to stop them? i literally died after reading this : laughing :

Glad you enjoyed it. ^^

yeah i enjoyed , but this move willn't demotivate the customers of The Continental dive bar ? why should they even do this ?

Good point and great question.

If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear. If freedom of speech is taken away, then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter. Freedom is the breath of everyone's life. What is written in notice is so unhuman honestly.

Agreed! Freedom should never be messed with. Freedom is the very foundation of most peoples lives.

Yes, freedom is everyone's soul and key to secret happiness.

I actually have a different take on this. I'm in full agreement that freedom of speech is one of our most cherished rights, but so is my right to do what I want on my property. Freedom of speech means that the government can't tell me what I can or can't say - it doesn't apply to private businesses.

The irony here is that if bars, restaurants, shops, etc. aren't allowed to put up signs like this, then not only is their freedom of speech hindered, but their property rights are trampled on as well.

If I own a bar I should be allowed to make any rules I want as a precondition to let you get in or to let you stay. I should be allowed to ban you for race, age, sex, hair color, because you're taller than me or just because I don't like the way you look. I should be allowed to ban any words that I don't like and I should be allowed to make you say anything I want as a requirement to get in. I should be allowed to make you say "John Dickinson is my hero" or "I'm an idiot" or anything else I choose because that is MY establishment and not anyone else's. That doesn't affect your freedom of speech because you haven't been forced, and you never had a right to come onto my property to begin with.

The great thing about freedom is that I get to make the choices for my stuff (e.g. a bar) and you get to make choices for your stuff (i.e. your body and your money). If people don't like my rules they won't come to my place and eventually I'll probably have to shut down due to lack of money and/or public outrage.

Either way, I agree that freedom of speech is under attack and we need to work to preserve it. But it will never help to take away someone else's. Let's focus on the real enemy - the government - and "literally" just ignore the idiots that want to make poor business choices.

Very good point and thank you for the different approach to the topic. Establishments should have the right to set rules in to place but there are rules to setting rules. Such as you cannot discriminate against one group.

Freedom of speech is most definitely under attack and the Government is the enemy on this. In Canada they are fined or sent to jail by not using the correct gender that a person identifies with (and there a long list of gender identities there), if people do not watch it that will be the USA. We will not be able to say normal words without a government punishment.

that message is very discriminatory and the word literally if it affects the freedom of expression and much, greetings

a high quality content

Thank you!

IMHO the cause of this - probably meant as a joke and commentary on the Kardashians - is a raising intolerance in our society as a whole. There are so many topics where people get easily offended. I am old, but I remember my behavior when dating as an 18 year old. What was "cool" and edgy then, would not be tolerated today. Everything becomes racist and sexist and will eventually offend a snowflake somewhere. You have to walk on eggshells today. You go to jail for wolf - whistling in the UK. No joke. It's offensive...

Could be that this was meant as a joke and you are very correct... We walk on eggshells and people do get offended very easily nowadays.

muy buen mensaje de tu parte amigo, un Saludo desde Venezuela:)

Muchas gracias!

Para eso estamos amigo :D

Hello friend, very good topic .. The Venezuelans have taken away our freedom of expression, we are informed by social networks .. Governments claim to defend "freedom of expression" in almost all the constitutions of the world, but in reality it is not like that . Throughout the planet there are people who go to jail or suffer something worse simply by talking. And that is how they fight for the respect and promotion of all human rights. Greetings and be aware of your post I love it ...

Thank you! Governments do not defend any part of freedom, they figure out ways to take it... not give it. It is a messed up world that we live in.

How incredible that just for a word they run you from a place, people do not have freedom of expression, not only do they pass in the United States in my country, it also happens the government controls until the food is sad

It is very sad. Americans need to look at other countries and see what is happening to them because it will happen to us as well.
