Dear Diary - Let's Decentralize, so we can Recentralize

Random Thoughts on Freedom:

I have given lip service to Freedom most of my life, but I have had very little opportunity to experience it.  I'll be honest, most days I am annoyed by your Freedom.  :)

I haven't studied enough history and Philosophy on Freedom and how it plays out.  I grew up in a dictatorship (parents) I was educated in a dictatorship.  (Teachers and Principal) and moved into the work force with a clear chain of command.  (Bosses and Owners)  That is where I know how to operate,  I thrive where I clearly understand the power structure and who's approval I need to move ahead with my agenda.

Right away I appreciated that SteemIt was an experiment and a place to observe and practice freedom at some level.  It didn't know how much it was going to awaken my inner "Control Freak".

From a financial point of view, in the moment I am not a fan.  It isn't that I am upset about the price it is the wasted energy of hundreds of agenda's clashing.  It feels chaotic and slow.  This post is not a comment on anyone else's agenda, it is about my reactions.  In business you pick a path and head down it.  The path will not be perfect and is often adjusted, but there are just a few hands at the wheel steering the ship.  When you want to change directions you adjust the sails, let the people react, and then "Stay the course".

I've noticed in Bitcoin land the wealth is centralized, the mining is somewhat centralized, and once again the course is set by a few.  Obviously the same issues are happening with Steem.  I wonder if it is because that is how we know how to operate or is it human nature?

Will we get better at this with time?  Do we need to get better?

Another centralising aspect of this space is that so many of the so called dApps are nothing but. They are highly centralised relying on code, servers and human input of one corporation. If those things go away the dApp dies.

Truly decentralized apps are few and far between and usually pretty trivial in nature - like an exchange.

About a week ago, someone whose name I can’t remember did a post with an animated gif based on the daily reports that @arcange does that showed that although of course whale dominance is huge, it is slowly falling and that aggregate SP among all other classes of Steemians is steadily growing. The analysis suggested that, at some point down the road, orcas as a group might surpasses total whale power, that perhaps later dolphins as a class might surpass total orca power, and so on. Granted, all speculation, but trends suggest a possible “flattening” of influence. No time frame estimate was given if I recall correctly.

My thoughts on that are they are spreading it around. More accounts vs. more distribution. Sorry, I know it sounds negative.

I do agree it may spread some.

The reason we always seem to need clear leadership is that people are not accustomed to working together of their own volition. Seeds of trust are not often allowed to grow to their full fruition and so we argue a lot. Add to this, most of us subscribe to some -ism or another or some anti- or other which make it near impossible to work together.

Rather than throw our hands up and say “screw it, let’s go back to the old model” I think we need to work this out. It’s not without its headaches, but I find that forfeiting that “need to win” can help dramatically. Sometimes you just need to let the community learn from making mistakes, even when you know better...sometimes you don’t know as well as you thought. If I hadn’t forfeited the desire to always have it my way, I would have been gone with HF19. And I’m really glad I stayed.

This is a beautiful process, we are in a process of becoming empowered.

I personally believe in free market solutions and to let the chips fall where they may. If the Steem blockchain is overrun with people who punish opposing opinions then someone can (and I believe will) take the code, build on it, and create something new that addresses the concerns people had with Steem. The same is true of other cryptocurrencies, lots of forks and new projects coming out to address concerns in the originating project.

ZCash is an example of a project that has a bunch of concerns about how it was built and how rewards are given back to the founders/core team. This tension in the community has brought forward a lot of great new projects that address the concerns with the original. In the case of ZCash, some developers got together and created ZenCash to address the major concerns.

Excellent points. I am glad you commented. I am no longer concerned with how our early mining went as they have "held" their Steem and continued to be a part of the community.

Also, I do like the conversations, especially those which can sway opinions.

Nice Reply!

Thanks :)

I can't address any of the philosophical questions of freedom or human nature, but in terms of open source projects I've seen splits in a community happen. Inevitably, if enough people believe the project is worthwhile to continue working on, someone will grab the reins and start something better.

I hope it doesn't come to that point with Steem, but if it does I'm sure you and others here will adopt it and build it into something bigger and better.

I like the fact that everything is all over the place. I've never met so many anarchists in one spot........ especially so many anarchists that seem to be trying to control the world, or at least their little part of it.

Congratulations on going up to 69. That's a big accomplishment.

Thank you for noticing I was 68 for several years. (that's how it felt!) I am so excited you noticed, I am too old for "Mile Stone" posts.

It's a big deal for sure. I'm actually thinking about getting a real birthday cake and writing "Congratulations on turning 65" on it when I get to that Milestone marker.

I think you've been 68 for the entire time that I've known you. I'm definitely getting pretty tired of being 64 but I think it's going to be at least another month before I pass it.

first of ll the financial freedom can be achieved through a decentralized platform like steemit which has got the immense potential and as of now it is a habit for me steemiting 8 hrs a day, so my hobby has turned into a profession.

Thank you @whatsup and Have a great day.

To follow the path one wishes is not often abtained by the one as cause of various reasons and it is indeed our nature. To see downwards and make the use of others are things that most boss comes up with !
And about BTC it is indeed a fact but to see Steem heading that way is not probably the best scenario !

Life is a very complex thing happened with human being & it is in the nature of it to live freely.

But it is true to many aspect that we are dependent to the system vice versa.
Steemit is now the part of my life because it gives me freedom of choice & freedom of expression other than that it supports me financially. As a whole it is a platform which gives me satisfied freedom :-)

Hii madam @whatsup,

always glad to see your article. Here you shared your thoughts( your practical life Experiences) about freedom. There is no doubt freedom is blessing. I agreed with you.

SteemIt was an experiment and a place to observe and practice freedom at some level.

I think in this world financial power is every thing, if you financialy strong then freedom is in your hands. and i seems to myself so lucky that i joined the Steemit in very right time and fully hopeful to get financial freedom through Steemit.

Steem On.!

@whatsup,
For me if I could earn financial freedom, I could find the true meaning of the freedom as well! Actually, in last couple of months I made a kind of financial freedom due to this amazing platform! But this is not what I am seeking, freedom is not mean 100% financial, but with financial freedom we can fulfill almost 60% :D
I have 2018-2020, so during these time period I will try to make my path of life! So I have 2 more years with STEEMIT and hope it will help me to make the financial freedom! Then I got my entire life time to make my life freedom!

Cheers~

Human nature....actually quite predictable.

it is not that easy to have decentralized steam or bitcoin. whales always play a keyrole as we all know 90% of the bitcoin is owned by 4% bitcoin addresses and miners can play their own game :(

steemit was never supposta be decentralized, if it was the preminers would have dumped their premined steem insted of using it to censor anyone that talks about how the whales got their steempower.
They have openly said a couple of times that the system is working exactly how it was intended. They were never going to take away their own centralized power and have no plans to ever do it.
If they fixed the problems they would loss profit and we know that they are never going to allow that to happen.
lol

Interesting point. I don't pretend to know what happened mining, in fact, I have read a lot of versions.
Well, it certainly isn't decentralized. :)

The nodes might be but the money isnt.

The steemit rule:
He who holds the steem makes the rules.
:D

Nice article, good point! I think it will get better with time, Steemit has the ability to work under a moral code that could level out the playing fields a little with some tinkering and time :)

Yes mining tends to be centralized in bitcoin and with the passage of time POW tends to be centralized and that is the reason why the future of mining will be POS not POW.

Thank you...steem on and stay blissful...

The Bitcoin miners will never move to POS unless countries around the world aggressively move to shutdown any mining operations. That seems unlikely especially when governments are actually starting to take part in mining... If we could get to the point where POW mining could be done by anyone with some spare CPU instead of high power ASIC or GPU then it would become a lot more decentralised. BTC mining could become the most popular screensaver ever... But miners wouldn't vote to make mining ASIC and GPU proof. And we would still have farms of CPUs mining but hopefully drowned out by billions of consumer owned CPUs...

POS mining send great but unless it can support a very large pool of block creators or witnesses has the same centralisation issue. Chains like GridCoin randomly let anyone be a block producer based on a probability related to how many coins you hold. But again we have centralisation as the richest will get to do the most staking.

So far the only truly decentralised system I've seen is that used by directed graphs such as Tangle in IOTA. Everyone participates approving transactions and doing a small amount of work to avoid spamming. However so far I think Tangle has some issues that mean it is not to be trusted. Yet. Until then I think the best hope is a chain using POS with a large and community elected set of block producers. Vitalik claims Casper can use up to 2000 but I don't know if that scales to use for all blocks Vs the occasional checkpoint blocks.

It's getting there. It isn't truly decentralized, but i noticed some whales ego's go down a little bit, and some of them actually helping other people , thus changing my opinions on current drama.

it's true we are born free and it's our right to live free as well and no doubt steemit is a perfect place where we can feel freedom, thanks for sharing your nice thoughts with us, Stay blessed

Commenting on the random thoughts on freedom. Freedom has a price and that price is chaos. In philosophy, I usually say, total freedom can never be achieved if we are to survive as humanity,

@whatsup....steemit is only the thing which is fulfill my basic economical needs..and this platform is also used for gaining knowledge from others and learning new things..my self i know a most information every day...this is a good platform to everyone..

Wow.Amazing article. And your writing is really awesome.Your thought is really amazing.Your writing touch my heart.I really like to read your writing @whatsup .Thanks for sharing sir.
Upvote and resteem 100% done

about BTC it is indeed a fact but to see Steem heading that way is not probably the best scenario !

So true with no so working regulatory system decentralization seems the only way out!

great to share

thank's for sharing
love it

this will get better and we also have to change to an era ysng better friends. I am very happy with your life story where you have to follow all the orders. respect for others is what we should develop friends, steam and bitcoin this is a good land for the whole world. thank you guys, it's so great to be friends with you.

random thoughts brings the best ideas within us..i think it is the best food to a tired mind :)i really like the ideas of you..and i think freedom lies in the way we look at it..i dont know whther you would agree with me..but for me freedom is the ultimate pleasure of doing something you love to do :)
sir i wanted to tell you something..please dont go mad with me..if it is not a good thing to be done on a comment section please make me aware of it..i love to know the faults with me..through them i learn..i have written some posts from the random thoughts.if you can please check it and tell me how is it..i just wanna improve myself..if it is not a good thing to be done, please let me know it kindly :)

https://steemit.com/beauty/@steemclaira/the-love-and-us

Please for the love of all things good, why do you tell me you are going to do something when you have already stated it isn't a good thing to do?

Look usually in the real world asking for some feedback is a good thing, but here we are overwhelmed with spammy links. My first suggestion is to look for a better translation tool or find a tool which helps with your English.
My second suggestion is to follow the other suggestions you have received about posting your links on other people's blogs.
Your request seems sincere and I know my advice sounds harsh, but I am trying to be clear and blunt, not mean.

Oh no..i completely understand you..thanks for the advise sir :)

its human nature that one day he will try to control every thing of life to feel it like a king.

The more you start loving what you do,your freedom begins. But in this world we need to have some sort of financial stability to gain the freedom.I am not saying "NO" to that. But I hope that when we start loving things we do,we can find the freedom through them.Freedom is not a place or a position or something that can be bought with the money.Freedom is a feeling where you meet yourself
-cheers0

Great post tnx for sharing I just upvoted steemit all the way check out my new post.

@whatsup mam...
I was thinking to write an article about how Steemit changed my life, but you asked that question before! Here my answer:-
It helped me in few ways!

  1. Financial help to make a decent income - I was in a huge financial trouble and I had a dark future, but STEEMIT gives me the light to see how beautiful it is.

  2. Freedom, I have 10 hrs per day job. So if this goes well, I will leave my job and will be a full time Steemian. Hope you all will support me like you do now.

  3. This is a learning curve. Actually my native language is Sinhala, now i am reading, writing in English. Not in fluent yet, but I do my best. And also i could see the world here. Your experience, others experiences wow this is a university of all kind of studies.

  4. Most important thing is I could find great friendships here! That's the most important thing in my life!

Finally I would like to say, yeah STEEMIT changed my life style and it changed in a good way! I wish it will change more and more and more! After all I found people like you,

Thanks dear...

@whatsup You kept me guess after reading this thought provoking analytical post.

I wonder if it is because that is how we know how to operate or is it human nature?

My deduction here, is that is it only few people that will dictate a course or path to follow? Then, where is the freedom?

We shouldn't accept the status quo. We need to strive to improve our freedoms in all aspects of human life. Do not cave in! We will not reach our utopian aspirations; but we certainly should make progress as we aspire. Otherwise, why should we bother to exist?

I also believe strongly about decentralization being the path to our freedom.
The Decentralized Path

does steemit really awake your inner "Control Freak". ?
for me, freedom is a blessing

good thoughts, nice to read your story :)

freedom is the key factor for everywhere, early success could be made when you think freely and work hardly.

"Instead of trying to make your life perfect, give yourself the freedom to make it an adventure, and go ever upward."
Drew Houston

I think everyone who is currently running around shouting about how awesome the decentralised future is going to be need to stop, look and listen.

Same shit, different public relations. :(
