Then (1994)
ANNOUNCEMENT OF PD-DOS PROJECT:
A few months ago, I posted articles relating to starting a public
domain version of DOS. The general support for this at the time was
strong, and many people agreed with the statement, "start writing!"
So, I have...
Announcing the first effort to produce a PD-DOS. I have written up a
"manifest" describing the goals of such a project and an outline of
the work, as well as a "task list" that shows exactly what needs to be
written. I'll post those here, and let discussion follow.
If you are thinking about developing, or have ideas or suggestions for
PD-DOS, I would appreciate direct email to me. If you just want to
discuss the merits or morals of writing a PD-DOS, I'll leave that to
the net. I'll check in from time to time to see how the discussion is
going, and maybe contribute a little to what promises to be a very
polarized debate! :->
I am excited about PD-DOS, and I am hoping I can get a group started!

PS -- of course, if this already exists, please point me to the group
leader so I can at least contribute!

@pagandance,
Are you a Software Eng? I feel you are! In 1994 I was a kid so no idea about this technology! I learnt C, C++, C#, Java and weak in Php and it was one of the most fatal error I have made in my entire life time so far :D
This is actually a great idea!
"FreeDOS is a complete, free, DOS-compatible operating system that you can use to play classic DOS games, run legacy business software, or develop embedded systems. Any program that works on MS-DOS should also run on FreeDOS."
I wish I could be a part of this! Thanks for updating this useful information with us!
Cheers~

@theguruasia,
I am not a software engineer, but I had computers since the ZX81 and have always found it a nice feeling to be in control of your computer, even if you don't have much knowledge or intelligence to grasp everything. And the DOS os was something like that. I liked the idea that you could put a graphic user-shell around it like windows 3.11 and windows 95.
I wish there would come some new free graphic shell that would be as good as Mac or Win7 instead of the ugly and unfriendly linuxes. I don't know if DOS should go to 64 bit then, but if so, I think a 64 bit DOS should certainly be made, so we the world could finally enjoy a totally free and user-friendly and understandable operating system for our computers. As after half a century of 'home computers' we still have to put up with the big ugly greedy moneycrunchers like Microsoft and Apple or else put up with Linux or BSD that are not fit for simple folks.
There should be a free and easy and powerful operating system, understandable and controlable by everybody in the world. I can't understand why we don't have that yet!
Cheers to u 2
