Movie review: Free Guy (2021)

in freeguy •  3 years ago

It's meee. Guy who comes on the internet after washing all the crust and dust off his dilapidated body to come spew word diarrhea out for money. Today, I'm going to be going over a movie that came out recently, called Free Guy. You know, that movie that stars Ninja the Fortnite player, and Pokimane, the woman everyone jerks off to on Twitch. I mean, there was some other stars put into the project like Ryan Reynolds and such, but, who gives a fuck about him. Anyways, the concept of this movie is a pretty entertaining/fun one, where the setting to the movie is a focus on a GTA Online like video game. So, being the whore for video games that I am, I was pretty interested in it back when it was announced awhile back.

Thankfully, it was well executed and worth the wait.

Now, when I'm saying it's like a GTA Online game, I mean without all the kids screaming about how they fingered your mom or spamming out their tik-toks in hope to chase clout. The setting of the narrative is inside an action packed mass multiplayer game, and it's a really chaotic fun setting. With an NPC experiencing never ending ass and blood and guts, eventually getting sentience about his existence after he starts getting tired of it. He begins to get noticed for his actions in game and outside in the real world, and it leads to some big repercussions in the real world which are actually explored pretty well.

I will say expect some weird/cringe moments going into this movie. Just as an example, you're going to hear the word noob being said several times, even though I haven't heard anyone utter that word since 2011. You may even notice someone saying things about someone being pwned. I know, I know, that might sound a bit scary and make you wince. You'll just need to make sure you keep an open, lubed up sphincter and allow the movie to ease its way in with some of the out of date jokes and words, and just enjoy the nostalgia of thinking about people in Xbox live lobbies saying annoying shit non stop.

Now, I know that sounds horrible and like the people who were writing this movie have probably never touched a video game in the last few decades. But, they actually do a pretty solid job with hitting the theme of this movie, and I don't think the moments where that kind of shit happens actually takes away from the movie. It is just a fun, entertaining feel good movie and it does that pretty well. Ryan Reynolds of course is basically just playing himself like he does in every movie these days, which is fine. He's a pretty likeable guy and has a decent sense of humor, so I think that works just fine as long as it's a comedic role he's in. At this point, people would probably be bummed if they went into a movie starring him and he wasn't just his normal, jokey self.

I will definitely say there's a lot of stuff in the movie that you can sit there and say that it doesn't make sense, but, I don't really see the point in poking holes in the film when it's a popcorn type flick that's just here to be a fun ride. If you can't hold yourself back from frothing at the mouth and tugging your nutsack out of anger of a movie not being down to the earth, then this may not be for you. It is not trying to be more than a fun movie with a point that it's trying to get across.

If I had to say anything negative about the movie, It would be that a part of the plot seems like some fan fiction that someone wrote on 4chan in 2011, involving a live stream and having every single person on the planet tuning it to check out this live stream. And, I do mean, like, every single person. They have every single news channel showing it, for example. Imagine having MSNBC showing Ryan Reynolds in a blue shirt wiping his ass, just losing their minds over it. Everyone in this universe is either constantly consuming content from this game or playing it 24/7. It's just a bit goofy and seems like a 15 year old came up with that part of the story. It's fine since the movie is silly and doesn't take itself seriously, but, yeah. A bit weird.

Overall, the humor lands most of the time. Not every joke is an absolute banger or anything, but it hits more than it misses. Ryan Reynolds does a fine job as an entertaining wacky character. The action in the video game world is pretty cool to watch unfold, with tons of easter eggs thrown into the movie for you to catch. I'm not gonna say this is an absolute must see flick, and if you don't then you're a fucking troglodyte or anything. It's just fun, and I would say if you wanna have a laugh give it a try. Or, you could go watch Money Plane, the greatest cinematic experience to sit through.

Well, until next time I guess, you sweet babybois. I'm gonna go rot in my sarcophagus for another week. Later!
