Do you know Das Schwaze Auge? It is a German pen&paper that is loosely based on Tolkien, but much better. That is the reason I am not a big fan of the Hobbit and LOTR, because the German version DSA is just much cooler. There are also a bunch of video games based on it, like the Northland Triology and Drakensang.

I made a German Let's play of the game a while back
I thought about mentioning because of the Eye and the TSA god of life being a serpent, but well he is a lizard not a snake not sure if it counts :D. One of the cool things is that religion has much more meaning in DSA. You got the god of thieves being the same as the god of merchants, you have radical Praios (God of the Sun) followers who burn non-believers, you have the 13th God, the nameless one, who can grant much power but corrupts your mind until you become a tool fighting the human race.
