There is a famous saying "don't put all your eggs in one basket", that means if the basket falls down all of your eggs will be broken at the same time and you will be left with an empty basket.
In practical life, we can elaborate it with different examples, for instance, we should have different stream of income if one source is in crisis other will help us to survive. Further, we can say we should not be dependent on one person, if he will leave the organization, the organization will collapse. One more example will be like don't spend all of the energy on one thing, we should master different skill because we can't predict the skill is in demand will have the same importance tomorrow or not.
In short, we should not be dependent on one thing, it's better to have different resources. People who don't put all of their eggs in one basket can save themselves from big troubles. its a kind of protection.
