I sit down to write something and I can never seem to find a subject to write about. Here I look at a blank screen and wonder what I want to say. When I'm out walking or away from the house I have a thousand different ideas about a thousand different things but when I sit down and am actually ready to go I have nothing. It is absolutely discouraging. To combat that block I use this tried and true method - the freewrite. I'll wander the house and look around for something. Then I'll work that into some sort of story. A salt shaker sitting on the stove can become a thousand different things if I let my imagination go. It can be as big as a collection of worlds trapped in a jar or as small as a shake of flavor on a frying egg. I never know where I can go till I find that spark lying around. Not everything I write will be good, some of it will even be very bad, but it is a step down a path that could lead to something incredible if I just start clearing away the barriers blocking it. I'm going to walk the yard now and take my notebook out for a stroll to see what might inspire me to create my next story. If you're having trouble finding a creative muse then I suggest you do the same. Look everywhere. Under rocks and up in trees and even in ditches along the road. You never know what treasures are locked up in your imaginations chest until you find a key. Enjoy your day!
