Prompt of the day “Turn Signal” - Driving Indecision 😞

in freewrite •  6 years ago

How many people out there “correctly” use the turn signal? With those I encounter around here I suspect very few!

I am an obsessive signaller, sometimes when not necessary but never when it causes confusion. When driving around Victoria your more then likely going to encounter two types of signallers.

The two groups that make things confusing are the “as I move signaller” and the “don’t know if I want to move signaller”!

As I Move

These are the real bastards of the road, no concern for anyone else squeezing through traffic signalling late forcing their way along. Often they are also the people whom slow down abruptly and turn without using a signal at all! Lane changes or merging is done early cutting across solid lines just to then be able to block whom ever was in front of them from merging into their rightful place! Worst of all is the change of mind when they do actually signal, does no one understand how to commit yourself to an action behind the wheel for the sake of road safety for everyone!

Don’t Know If I Want To Move

These people are overly cautious or nervous most likely from run ins with the other “as I move” signallers. They cause many accidents not because they are themselves dangerous drivers but because the dangerous drivers do not expect someone to give space. These are the people that end up at the end of a merging lane stopped not feeling as if they can merge and highway traffic just keeps blowing past them! Again commit to your actions, envision what you wish to do before you get there and follow through!

Notice The Theme

The problem comes usually not from their driving habits though dangerous or seemingly erratic rather the moments of indecision. Those times when you get half way and change your mind mean while the world around you does not stop and account for your lack of commitment. Think of it this way, even as a dangerous driver you expect others to commit to their actions and get frustrated when it is otherwise. How is it that you do not see your actions of driving indecision contribute to the problem you yourself are concerned with?

Remember just commit, if you commit to an accident it very well may be a better accident then what comes from the indecision.

An example from around here this winter, one person changing lanes on the highway would have needed to slow down and decided to swerve back to the other lane half way through merging. This person is of the “as I move” type and scared the traffic around him as he was squeezing without using a signal at all in slushy winter driving. He had to stop anyways and managed to come to a stop safely but the person behind him was of the “I don’t know” type and slammed on their brakes. It was a corner. They slid into oncoming traffic causing a head on incident with a large truck killing everyone in the vehicle instantly and causing the truck to plow into several other vehicles along the way.

All because someone didn’t signal and scared the person behind them!

Use Your Damn Signals And Commit To It!

Sad to see loss of life at any point in an accident but particularly when fault may never be truly know by he whom was responsible. Police put out another Tweet asking if anyone knows the man driving that witnesses reported did not even realize what happened behind him and could not pursue because of the wreckage.
