Faith is superior to and supersedes both reason and logic.
- By faith, we hurl down roadways at very high rates of speed. We trust the engineering and manufacture of our automobile and all of its various parts. We have faith in the road system, that it will be clear of debris and that the land that it was built on has not shifted or opened up into a gaping hole. We have faith in other drivers that they will remain on their side of the road and obey the driving laws, specifically at red lights and stop signs. Have you met the people who build cars and their components? Do you know what the statistical failure rate is? Do you personally know other drivers? Yet you still put your faith in them every day. Is that reasonable or logical? I think the answer is not really if you truly factored out all of the risks and the potential costs. But most of us drive or ride in automobiles every day because we deem it worth the risk (That we work really hard at not assessing) and we have faith that we will reach our destination safely.
- We have faith in the food that we eat. Do you really know what is in that last order that you placed at a fast food restaurant? How about that nice can of processed whatever? Do you know who prepared it or where the product originated from? Its Government approved so that makes it okay right...yeah you are eating on faith.
- By faith, a person will strap a bomb around his body and blow himself and others up for a god. Is it reasonable or logical to blow yourself up for a god that is incapable of taking care of the matter himself/herself/itself?
- By faith, an intelligent person will set aside experiential knowledge, empirical data, and historical evidence to believe an imaginary ideal.
- By faith, people believe in magic even when there is no magician.
- By faith, people presume to know the unknowable
- By faith, people can go back in time to before recorded history and reconstruct things that exist today only in petrified fragments. And they confidently claim to know what time in history the thing that no longer exists once did exist.
- By faith, people who have been alive for less than one hundred years can proclaim that they know what conditions were like on earth when it first began "billions" of years ago and that all of the elements and the laws of nature have remained constant from the beginning. There is no sense arguing over this, not one single person can tell me what happened on earth 10,000 years ago, much less a million years ago without making an assumption, and if you have to assume anything then it is not a fact it is faith.
- By faith, people believe that something came from nothing and that this something became a great universe so large that even with giant telescopes situated in outer space we can't see the end of it. Is it reasonable and logical that something could come from nothing? Has anyone ever created anything from nothing in a lab?
- By faith, these same people believe that the something that came from nothing formed itself into complicated life forms that were immediately able to self-replicate themselves using a vast library of information that just by chance formed at the same time. And they do this self-replicating feat with miniature machinery, using the energy converted from its own power generating plant, Is it even remotely reasonable or logical that something like this could happen by chance?
I get told a lot of times that I just believe what I believe by faith and that I have no proof of what I believe in. The proof is standing right there looking back at them dumbfounded that they are blind to that not so simple proof. You are never going to see a science experiment where something is created out of nothing. You will never see something that has no life in it and never has had any life in it suddenly come to life, not all by itself nor from some man-made mechanisms. If a man can take a pile of dirt in a lab and create any kind of living creature, no matter how "Simple," then even I might believe! Of course, if he really wants to convert me he would still need to create the dirt from nothing and then bring it to life. But until then I will proclaim to anyone who will listen that my faith in the God of the Bible is more reasonable and more logical than any other faith or belief found on this earth.
Notice I did not say religion, I have no faith in the religion of men. I have faith in the God who wrote and preserved the Bible through the ages. I have proved out that Word in my own life, and I have put its claims and promises to the test. My faith is not a blind faith, it is not something that I feel in my gut or that I have reasoned out in my mind. I didn't have to do some religious act or say some magic words in prayer. I simply heard His Words from the Bible and then recognized and believed the truth in my heart, Which is my spirit. When I did that my spiritual eyes were opened and I could see much more clearly. I see where others are putting their faith even when they can't see it for themselves. Everyone has faith and they are using that faith when making life decisions every day. Where will your faith lead you to? Do you have enough faith to believe that you came from nothing and that one day you will return to nothing? That certainly takes a lot more faith than I have!

You made so many great points about how we have faith in so much in our world, so much so that it overrides the "logic" that we hold. As we strive for answers that we will never have, so much has to be taken on faith. I like how you made sure to point out the difference between your true, heartfelt faith and religions organized by those who try to say that their interpretation of God's words and will is the only correct one. I have faith that there is more to the universes than we will ever know and that there is a loving God that lets us make our own decisions in order to find and become our true selves. Thank you, Deacon, this was so thoughtful and I wish I could just sit on a porch, drinking lemonade together and listen to you talk.
