Champagne // 5-minute Daily Freewrite by @mariannewest

Champagne means a call for celebration. We used that alot in wedding dinners. A toss for the couple and families to signify different meanings of life together.

I don't fancy champagne. In fact, I only have little to zero knowledge of alcohol or beer or whisky etc. I can't really differentiate. I just know I don't need them. Some friends will be like meh...

A cheers of coffee perhaps?

But I love celebration!

Celebration — here I am, thinking of my second son, who is going to celebrate his 5th birthday 6 days from today.

He is going to be 5!

I just can't believe it. Time flies...

I still could remember vividly the day surgeon met up with us in his office to draw us a diagram of how was he going to cut him in order to fix his congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Then we were given the scariest stats that he was given 50/50 survival rate for the surgery and thereafter it was up to his vital organs whether to sustain him or to fail him.

"Fail him? Means?"

I remembered I asked.

"He will pass on."

I also remembered my tears kept flowing down after hearing that, at that moment I was gripped with sadness and fear.

Through many ordeals and he is still experiencing (or suffering) some complication now and then, we have emerged stronger than ever. We will never be the same as the persons we were 5 years ago when we had more time socialising, but our hearts have grown richer and fuller. More able to face fear with faith.

I thank God for life. Indeed, everyone is precious. Come to think about it, even the worst person on earth starts his or her life as a cute little adorable baby.

Ops. I typed way more than 5 minutes.

To my little champion CDH survivor, mummy toss a champagne of celebration with you for reaching 5 years old (young).

I love him to the moon and back.

You have a nice little boy. You can be proud of him.

Salutations!

JaiChai here.

How are you and yours today?

Your post reminded me of the first time I got drunk:

I was about 12 and a half y/o and working (illegally) as a busboy for a catering service that was hired for a wedding reception. After the event was over and the guests went home, I and the other staff found a couple of overlooked, unopened crates of Champagne!

Not wanting to be a coward - and of course, also trying to conceal my age, I joined the rest of the staff in consuming all that expensive alcohol.

Unfortunately, the next morning I found myself extremely hungover, in church and listening to my Dad delivering the Sunday sermon.

(Thank the Lord Buddha that I was far enough away from the pulpit that he didn't see me.)

I spent the whole time leaned forward with my forehead buried into the back of the pew in front of me, popping tic-tac breath mints, and thinking - no wishing - I would pass out, puke or die!

My mother thought I was just sick with the flu and would affectionately rub my back every few minutes.

Seated on my right was my older sister.

Knowing that I was not sick, but simply hungover from working the wedding, took much pleasure in viciously (and repeatedly) kicking my ankle whenever she thought I was going to doze off!

My right ankle was black and blue for over a week.

I don't know how, but I made through that service and the afternoon without throwing up on anybody.

And in spite of my lifelong insomnia habit, I slept like a baby that night...

Enjoyed your post.

What a story, well done, father as a preacher too lol. I went to church as a teenager very religiously, then found the wisdom of the Eastern spiritual path and took to that, far superior philosophy.

I also found the Christian faith lacking - on so many levels.

Consequently, I became a Buddhist (albeit, not a devout one) a couple decades ago.

May you and yours be well and love life today.

One love brother.

You should join @mariannewest's freewriting for this prompt. Really....!! =) to start working at 12, unbelievable. Was it tough for you that time?

Glad to know somehow somehow you made it through the service and could sleep soundly that night. Are you still having insomnia now?

Happy birthday to your little guy! The 5 year old miracle :)

There is so much to celebrate here! The skilled surgeon, the will to live, the miracle of medicine and parents love and prayers.

It never ceases to amaze me.

I am so touched by your story and by the fact that despite the odds, he has grown into a beautiful son, whose mom loves him to the moon and back. Be blessed, my friend.

And thank you for sharing your story.

I am a sober for my entire life. Yeah, but I don't forget to celebrate. It does not require any alcohol to celebrate. It all depends on your mind.
He is a cute little handsome guy!

You have much to celebrate @iamjadeline. ♥️

Your son looks like a very happy little person! I'm sure that you cherish each and every day with him. I also have children and would also be crushed if any of them suffered health issues like that. I commend you for being a great mother, and I lift my coffee cup to you!

Beautiful little boy. Five is a great age. Enjoy a cup of coffee. :-)

I will drink a toast with you (no champagne here either sadly) to celebrate your little guy's 5th birthday. How scared you must have been before the surgery. He's a very happy looking little boy today and I know that you cherish every minute.

Happy Birthday to your baby boy. 🎉🎊🙏
