Quiet as a churchmouse, was Charlotte. She walked tenderly through the fresh fallen snow, pausing only to ensure her hem was below her ankle, but above the snow. A freshly pressed skirt with damp hems would hardly do. Today was the day her favorite aunt arrived by postman's carriage from Chicago!
When Charlotte reached the end of the lane, she turned right. Miles of woods rarely broken by a path leading to another's cabin passed her by. The scent of pine was heavy in the air. Limbs drooped under their new weight, and a feeling of hush, of gentleness permeated her senses.
When at last she arrived at the general store, she was dismayed to find the postman's carriage already arrived. Charlotte nearly allowed herself to rush inside, but she put a hand on her heavy-beating heart, took a deep breath of the cold air now mixed with the smell of horses and
