Cyberspace!
Cyberspace helps those with ideas and no products become people with money! Sometimes they can even offer a money back guarantee. The funny thing about that is, since their costs are near zero, there's not really a risk. The people who send money in will never be less than the number of people who ask for money back, and so they'll just keep the money from the folks who either didn't bother getting their money back or for whom the product, they believe, actually worked!
The double your money back folks, now those are the ones who truly believe in their product. But how they stay in business... how there AREN'T just a bunch of scam artists getting money back from them, I dunno.
Double your money donated to a charity.. that's the ticket. That's the solution. Both business and consumer are taking a risk. The beneficiary, if the business arrangement doesn't work out, is some do-gooder. So that's nice. Then only altruists will demand their money back.
Ha. Altruists. I used to lie awake at night wondering if one could be truly altruistic. Trying to concoct scenarios in my head in which people were purely altruistic, like, what if no one knew about their good deeds, or whatever... but I always came to the conclusion that the person could be truly altruistic, but you couldn't PROVE it.

Oh, MLMs come to mind. Various other software scams. My mother sometimes pays for virus softwares that she shouldn't have that she thinks work because of her perception that may or may not have been scams/viruses. She's trying to learn not to panic because of ads telling her to panic, but that's like asking a beaver not to make dams.

I’ve often pondered the altruism question myself. I suppose that even if there can be no pure altruism as the feeling of having done good is a reward in itself, perhaps a charitable person could still be considered more selfless than the person who pursues pure self-interest.

And ultimately, I think I've become a pragmatist. It's the impact of our actions, not our intentions, that makes them "good" or not, though we can certainly be sympathetic to folks with good intentions.
