She saw his face melt, and she wasn't frightened. When his muscles sloughed off his bones, she wasn't frightened. When his dry bones baked in the hot fire, she wasn't frightened.
But when he turned his head and smiled his lipless grin, she was frightened.
It was just a blast of the blaze she told herself... but then he got to his feet, and walked through the fire towards her, always smiling.
She bit her thumb so hard it bled, trying to stop herself from screaming. It would do no good, she knew. The roar of the fire would drown her out, and she was trapped in the backyard. Help was only a few hundred feet away, but there was to way to it except THROUGH the fire.
WHY WAS HE STILL ALIVE?!
His corpse should have rotted ages ago, but it was still as fresh as the day she killed him. She should have ground his bones to dust, but how was she to know THIS would happen.
Why'd she kill him you ask? For the perfect reason... because he had stolen her life savings in a scam. And yet, Karma thought that hadn't been a good enough reason for murder, and here he was... alive.
Screw karma. She picked up a shovel and easily battered and scattered his bones. They kept reassembling, but keeping him incapacitated until help arrived seemed entirely feasible.
