Prompt: my shoe got stuck in the mud

in freewrite •  7 years ago

When I was a kid we lived in the country. I was filthy ALL the time. We had three acres on which to roam, and as long as we stayed within the property line, we could do and do whatever we wanted. At the time it felt as though our Land was vast, but now three acres doesn't seem all that large to me.

When it rained, we would have tiny mudslides, and my brother and I couldn't resist playing in the mud and muck making pies and trying to traverse the slides while holding onto roots hanging from above. We sometimes got stuck and our mom had to wade over to pluck us out. We played in the creek, catching salamanders and frogs; picked soaproot, made bows and arrows and pretended to be part of the local indigenous people.

I often played as though I was an Amazon Princess, all barefooted and wild. I recall there was a sheer blue scarf that had a hole in the middle that I'd slip over my hips to be my skirt. I miss those days where we had no TV, and everything was an adventure. However, my bliss was sometimes interrupted by noticing that the hawks and vultures soaring on air currents above me, laying on a steel flatbed trailer warming in the sun, were in fact spying ME for their potential dinner!

What a gorgeous recollection! I was transported into my own early years of riding bikes and catching crawdads in the santa ana river

Thanks, Love!
