Day 479: 5 Minute Freewrite: Monday - Prompt: Beacon

This is my entry into the Monday Freewrite Prompt, hosted by
@mariannewest

I first came to Steemit, filled with hope of finally finding a
Venue where my writing and imagination could finally help
Me find some monetary return for the work I put into my
Poems and the stories I relate.
For me, This has become a
“Beacon of Disappointment”.
There are those who will (rightly) point out that my fall in
Fortune had more to do with that calamitous decline in
The value of Bitcoin a couple of years ago, and who of us
Could have predicted that?
But the fact remains, my account value THEN was nearly
$5.000, and although today, I have not withdrawn a 1¢,
Not ONE red cent, and my account value now stands at
Less than $500. Estimated value.

I hear you! I haven't taken anything out either and kept earning and the value going down 😳
But I am convinced that it will go up again - a lot of good Dapps are being built on the Steem blockchain and some pretty good people are part of it.
Of course, we don't know.... but I look at it that whatever I have in my wallet is that much more than posting to Facebook. there, for sure, my balance would be zero LOL

BUT @mariannewest, it begs the question:
Is it WORTH the emotional toll to a person with major, clinical
Depression, to have this carrot dangled in front of you day
After day, working, writing, posting and watching your
Net worth diminishing rather than increasing? To
Spend a significant amount of time each day
Checking your balance, looking for comments
That most often are not there (because I don't
Make a point of going and commenting on other
Posts, I don't scratch yours, you won't scratch mine).
I go to my feed, looking for something that I might find
Interesting enough to actually ready, and it always seems
To be flooded with "my actifit reports" and Steem exchange
or other blockchain posts that I simply cannot understand, so
What am I supposed to do? Just go down my followers list each
Day and upvote uninteresting posts until I no longer have any
Vote power left? I had such hopes, that like tsu once was, this
Would be a paying platform where I could find friends to have
A back and forth exchange of common interests, but alas,
I am not finding it here these days. Sure, I have friends,
But when I go to my followers lists, I find that many
Of those who I would consider friends, don't post
But once every few MONTHS!!! What do they
Know that I don't? Oh I know. It's a waste.

Again, I hear you. For me, while I do have the hope and the faith that Steem will go places, I don't count on it. So, the way I look at it, even if it is just 2 cents I have - it is 2 cents more than I would have on Facebook.

Also, I hardly ever check my balance in US $. I just look and hope that my SP balance is growing. And for the most part - I want that to grow so I can give more votes.

So, I am setting my expectations in a way that they can be fulfilled.

I also found that participating in community projects is key. A lot of conversations happen on discord. Now, I am in a lot of discord groups but I spend most of my time actually commenting here on Steem and building relationships that way.

I practically never look at my feed because I don't want to see who had money to pay for a big upvote. by not looking there, I miss a lot of the drama.

Obviously, I spend a lot of time reading and commenting on the freewrites and doing the @freewritehouse stuff. Sometimes, that prevents me from entering contests that might make me Steem and such.

But contests are often a good way to build community as well.

And if you have a certain interest, follow that and find friends with the same interest. I actually need to start a list of people who are not freewriters and/or powerhousecreatives to remember their names and go and visit.

Have you applied to join #powerhousecreatives @steemitbloggers? they are a very community oriented group - as are we...

But leaving a comment on every post you vote on is a must. Not saying that you voted for them but saying something about their post...

And I can't agree with you that Steem is a waste. I have made so many friends here and many of those friendships have let to RL meetings and friendships.

So, carry on. Look for something that feels like a success and forget about the rest. that would be my advice if you are looking for that LOL

I clicked on #powerhousecreatives and it took me to a feed,
I didn't see anything to "apply to join", I haven't clicked on
@steemitbloggers yet. I think you are missing my point.
I am in discord, I am in about a dozen different servers
in both Steemit and Weku, and I don't go to any of
Them. I am not a joiner, I don't like following
The masses, nor jumping thru hoops to get
Votes (I cheered when I saw you say that
About seeing who had the most money
To buy the biggest upvote) even my
Friends and/or followers, when I
DO go to my feed, if a post has
$10 + already, I am not tossing
In my measly 1¢ to that pot.
