The bull stood in the corral, breathing heavily. He had had an exhausting day. It started with his food provider ushering him into a small container. Then, a few hours of loud noise, wind, and jostling took him to somewhere new.
He was led into yet another enclosure, where he spent a good part of the light time listening to the foreign noises and the smells of emotionally upset animals. He heard loud, excited yelling for hours on end, with the occasional moan of sorrow. Accompanying it all was the huffs, squeals, whinnies, and whines of scared and angry animals. He was afraid. Then, the people came to his enclosure.
First, they led him out to a new place. It was so much louder here, and the stench of primal excitement was heavy in the air. The people very carefully slipped a rope around his middle. He let this happen, as he was used to people doing things near him. It wasn't until they tightened it that he felt the pain. He tried rubbing it against the walls, moving around. This new enclosure was very small though, and he had almost no capacity to move. Then, horror of horrors, a person jumped on his back! Here he was, stuck with this painful rope, trapped in a tiny place having to endure all this noise, and now one of them wanted to ride him? No, this would not be tolerated.
All of a sudden, the side wall opened up with a loud beep. In a flash, the bull dashed into this new, open space. He could feel the person on his back struggling to stay on. He started jumping, whirling, kicking, anything he could to do get this nuisance off. He dashed toward the walls, and with a quick stop and spin, he fling the person on his back high over the walls into the crowd of screaming people. This brought yet another loud cheer, but he was too tired to care.
Standing in the open space, some colorful people slowly approached him. Exhausted, he consented to be led out of the area, where thankfully people took the rope off of him.
This was to be the first of 3 such indignities. Each time, he bucked the rider to the screams of the people. Finally, he was left alone, stuck in the corral, munching on some hay.
Hopefully he could go home soon.
Greetings my fellow Earth citizens :)
I wanted to write about an aspect of rodeos that I had more personal experience with. When I was younger, my family used to watch professional bull riding. I never really considered what that experience must be like for the animals. I hope that this story has brought you some new perspective.
Here is a picture of a bull happily frolicking in a field, as they should be able to do.
I am having my FreeWrite’s be an SBI giveaway. This is a way to reward my fellow FreeWriter’s, and hopefully motivate me to do daily freewrite’s again. No promises on that, but I am going to make an attempt.
What you need to do to enter is simply comment on this post with a link to your freewrite. I will then assign you a number, and when I write the next post, I will pick using a random number generator. There’s no need to resteem or upvote, though it would be helpful to allow me to do this contest for longer.
I am also hosting another contest if you would like to enter that as well. Everyone is welcome :)

There are so many situations like this that a lot of us never even consider the other perspective. Thank you for sharing what I can imagine is a pretty close approximation to how the bulls feel in that situation. I think there are a lot of things like this across cultures that are just taken as the norm but if we really stop to think about we might not be so keen on perpetuating the custom.

You're welcome, I'm glad that you think I captured the perspective well.
I try to practice introspection as much as possible, to question my own beliefs and traditions. I know I'm not fully successful, but if changed a lot of the ideas I once held as concrete truths. I feel like if more people asked themselves "Why do I do this?" regularly, the world would be a very different place.

I think you captured pretty well what it must be like for the bull...

Thank you. Maybe someday humanity will respect the desires of our fellow animals and not put them in situations like this.

I liked how the bulls perspective came out, and the direction you took with it, just wanting them off his back, and not to trample the rider into the dirt.

I'm glad you enjoyed it :) I didn't want to make the bull seem violent, just stressed and afraid.
