A Scorpion's Moonlit Adventure - Freewrite Day 609 Entry & SBI Giveaway - Prompt: Canyon

in freewrite •  5 years ago

The scorpion walked along the sandy ground, her poised tail shaking slightly with every step. She could hold it steady, but she thought the gentle bobbing was both menacing and mesmerizing, and liked the confidence it gave her. Plus, it made her poison dropping tail glisten in the moonlight. Her shiny black carapace did as well, every piece of her armored body like a mirror. She knew she was a dangerous beauty, and loved it.

Her trek was talking her through her canyon, the high walls reflecting the bright moon so that the whole region fairly glowed. Normally on a night this bright, she'd be playing it safe, keeping to the underbrush when she was hidden from those who found her a little too appealing. But tonight, she just wanted to be out in the light, strutting her stuff. She was feeling confident, invulnerable, nothing could ruin her mood.

Well, almost nothing.

She heard a soft scuttling, then a faint squeak. Immediately, she started moving as fast as she could for cover. She knew that noise, it emanated from a ferocious predator: a desert mouse. She saw a small opening under some roots, and scrambled towards it. Coordinating all her limbs in her terror fueled flight got tricky. Behind her, she could hear the soft patter of the dreadful creature's soft feet striking the sand, but she didn't, couldn't take the time to stop and defend herself. If she could just make it, she'd be safe.

She was close, so close. But she could feel the ground shaking as the giant beast kept right on her tail. With one final leap, she made it into the root structure. And with not a moment to spare. She could hear the gnashing of it's terrible teeth right outside, as they were gnawing at the roots, trying to make her a tasty meal.

Well, she wouldn't be made into food so easily. With a few well timed pinches of her sharp claws, she demonstrated that she would not go without a fight. Apparently deciding she wasn't worth the effort, the mouse walked away, departing with one final, bloodcurdling hiss.

She took a deep breath, calming herself from the encounter. Perhaps taking moonlit strolls wasn't the best idea.

Greetings my fellow Earth citizens :)

I really enjoy doing these stories. It's enjoyable to try to interpret things from the perspective of the less well liked animals. I hope this story got you to have some sympathy for the scorpion :)

I was looking for a scorpion that had a really cool appearance, but then I found this picture and thought it was honestly kind of cute, so I wanted to share it.

This story reminded me of something I saw recently. Apparently there is a species of mice that howls at the moon. They're like the wolves for their environmental niche.

I’ve found a really easy way to get pictures for some of the more obscure topics that I write about. Instead of going to Unsplash or Pixabay, I just search on Wikipedia, and use the picture there. So far, every one that I have seen is CC of some variety, so it works out awesomely. I highly recommend it.

I am having my FreeWrite’s be an SBI giveaway. This is a way to reward my fellow FreeWriter’s, and hopefully motivate me to do daily freewrite’s again. No promises on that, but I am going to make an attempt.

What you need to do to enter is simply comment on this post with a link to your freewrite. I will then assign you a number, and when I write the next post, I will pick using a random number generator. There’s no need to resteem or upvote, though it would be helpful to allow me to do this contest for longer.

I am also hosting another contest if you would like to enter that as well. Everyone is welcome :)

I love that you do these contests!! And write from the animals perspective 😄

I never thought I could get so emotionally invested in the survival of a scorpion -- but you made that work! Great story!

Thank you so much for the sbi! Greatly appreciated :)

You have a good knack forgetting the animal stories told. Mine is about bugs, a bit, but not the same :)
