Mongoose Amongst the Pineapple - Freewrite Day 480 Entry - Prompt: Pineapple

Hello all,

This is my response to the Freewrite prompt, a daily writing exercise that I will be trying to get myself into the habit of doing. Thank you @mariannewest for hosting these. The Freewrite community has also graciously agreed to “adopt” me, promoting me on their page and giving me daily upvotes. It is much appreciated, and hopefully my writings will be up to their standards.

I’m thinking about challenging myself to make all of the freewrites I do match a particular theme. So far, I’ve had a suggestion to make them about wild animals that tend to get a bad reputation, from @carolkean. I’d be curious if anyone else had any other suggestions.

It was pouring out, the hammering rain graying out the whole world, but that didn’t concern the mongoose as he wandered among the Hawaiian pineapple plantation where he made his home. He ran along under the broad leaves of the pineapple plants, the ran sliding off his thick fur coat. Today was special. He had finally found the scent of a female, after searching for many weeks. He had been beginning to lose hope that he would encounter one within the safety and easy-hunting grounds that was the plantation. So many insects lived here, feasting off the pineapples, that he was never hungry. He hadn’t wanted to leave, but the urge to find a mate had grown strong as he got older. But, huzzah, his search had paid off. Now, the only problem was getting to this female before the rain washed away all of the scent. Hence, his rushing. It was getting harder to tell if the scent was getting fresher, but the only thing he could do was continue following it through the undergrowth. He leapt over a fallen pineapple, but it rolled under him and he landed hard in a puddle, letting out a loud squeak. To his surprise, he heard a responding squeak nearby. Throwing caution to the wind, he got up and darted towards the noise. And it was his lucky day! It was the mysterious female who he’d been tracking. They slowly walked up to each other, sniffing and circling. With a final inhale, the female nuzzled against his head. This was to be the start of something beautiful.

They’re an invasive introduced species in Hawaii, and unfortunately aren’t appreciated because they’re pretty destructive to the native wildlife.
