A Freethought Freewrite in Three Parts

Money was spent on drugs and... doctor’s visits and bills for ambulances and shrinks and supplies and caretakers but those days are long past. One might think the patient would have to be dead for those days to be over, but the truth, at least in my case, is that we just had to stop going to doctors.

The current medical model is making us sicker. If you are sick and you seek medical care, chances will be good the next thing you have to do, if not the next ten things you have to do, will be highly unpleasant or invasive, possibly even sadistic, “treatments” or diagnostics for what ails you. Think colonoscopies, dental work and orthopedics. Then you get sicker, because your back now hurts, or your head, or your pride, or you got a parking ticket while there, or your insurance won’t cover it, or you have to jump through hoops before your insurance does. Then it pays only part. Insurance is a racket.

I guess I should have led with “You don’t want to get me started.”

I loved camping and going down rapids. I did love me a nice easy rapid, but that I loved camping was never true for me. I was good with a hike in the woods, preferably all by myself. I had many of those. There was the time I was all alone out sitting on the bank of a stream, not a soul could see me. This was on the property of the old girl scout camp, there were hundreds of unused wild acres. When he’d gotten about 50 yards from me behind my back, I saw the dude with the cross bow. This was back when I was cute, and he was cute (if I didn’t spend any time wondering what he was doing back there with a crossbow) and he propositioned me to make love on the banks of that stream. Having done such things many times and knowing their joys, I still told him no. I regret that decision to this day.

I cannot believe I just told you all that. I can still see it very clearly, I might recognize him today, both of us wrinkled and only marginally cute, if he smiled at me just so. It would help if he were also holding a cross bow.

A sleeping bag coat. This prompt is so boring I have no choice but to write a nonsensical poem.

When the weather
is no pleasure
take a dip in goose down.
A good fluffy puffer
will make the cold warm.
No need to put on layers
or even warm socks.

One coat
a good pair of boots
an open door
and into the great outdoors you can walk.

The air in your lungs may crackle
and the tips of your fingers might complain
but a good sleeping bag coat later,
you can flush all your troubles down the drain.
